More than 600 products with BVO... which the FDA has just banned for food as it is no longer considered safe. Find out where to find (and avoid) BVO... until the law comes into force in August 2025! Luckily, manufacturers already started to move away from BVO a few years ago, as it has long been banned in other countries such as Europe (for example Gatorade). But not all, and we have found more than 600 products with BVO in US foods ! Tips to avoid BVO: 🥤 86% of products with BVO are soda drinks - so stay clear from those / check labels. 🔍 How to find it on labels: it will show for example as "BVO", "Brominated Vegetable Oil", "Brominated Soybean Oil" or similar 📲 You can also use the GoCoCo App to help you detect products that countain ingredients/additives banned in Europe or the US 🧐 #bvo #brominatedvegetableoil #fda #foodadditives #foodandhealth #foodscanningapp

The food industry wants to eliminate the ultra-processed food (UPF) concept by claiming it's the same as foods high in sugar, salt, saturated fat or calories. Our data analysis proves otherwise 👇 🔁 There is significant overlap between classification of ultra-processed foods (NOVA scale) and “high in” nutrients of concern (Chilean warnings regulation): ▶ 82% of the ultra-processed foods would also require a Chilean warning, for excessive sugar, sodium, saturated fat or calories ▶ In turn, 79% of the products with Chilean warnings are UPFs 🔀 But there are also areas of discrepancy: overall, for more than 1 out of 4 products (27%) UPF and “high in” criteria are not be aligned.  In the US, across the 700,000 food products, some 190,000 would be either UPF or "high in" but not both. So these products would be scored widely differently according to one or the other standard. As Linn Steward RDN would put it, that is why we need this double lens , if we want the full picture! It is not simple black&white. That is why GoCoCo app provides a global score using both these criteria (+ WHO guidelines), so you can get all the shades of grey ! 👩⚕️ It also means that it is relevant to keep studying the impacts of UPF, irrespective of their nutritional composition. #foodscan #upf #ultraprocessedfood #chilefoodlabeling #highin

First appearance on American TV for GoCoCo📺! What an experience (French accent included 😅 ) I was invited on Fox 5 DC to discuss food, the Olympic Games, and our latest food & health study. Does it make sense to have Coca-Cola as one of the main sponsor for the Olympics or any sport competition? Well ... We talked about how we blame the consumer while we live in a toxic food environment full of ultra-processed food. Try to eat in moderation products designed to be over-eaten! It's like asking people to use Instagram or Tiktok for just 2 minutes a day. There is much to do to improve this and help consumers! Take Chile for example, where this matter was addressed a few years ago by a new food labeling law. Over there, if a product is high in sugar, salt, saturated fat or calories, it has to have a large stop sign on the packaging. As the FDA is currently designing new food labeling for the US, we studied the impact of the pioneering Chilean law would have if applied in the US. This revealed: - 𝟳𝟭% 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗴𝗮𝗿, 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝘁, 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝘁, 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀! - 41% of products are high in calories, and 37% are high in sugar In short, the aisles would be full of black warning labels... probably a good nudge for us to choose better and for manufacturers to reformulate, as demonstrated in Chile 💪 Check out our blog for more details: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dmWJZkkY #chilefoodlabeling #fda #us #foodlabeling #hfss

71% of US packaged foods are excessive in salt, sugar, saturated fat or calories. Yes, 71%! So if the FDA were to implement warning labels like Chile, food aisles would be full of stop signs. But at least it would help consumers 😃 Find out more about our data analysis 👇

UK adolescents consume 66% ultra-processed food (UPF), new study reveals! Find out why👇 This public health issue affects the whole adolescent population, independently of their social-economic background! Some adolescents (Bite Back Youth activists) were invited into the UK House of Lords sessions on "Food, Diet and obesity" last May to share evidence on the food environment they live in... which explains a lot: 👉 Their context: "𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘞𝘦𝘥𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘴, 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘪𝘻𝘻𝘢 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘴, 𝘧𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘎𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘨𝘴. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘵. 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘦𝘢𝘵." 👉 One their proposals [on energy drinks] "𝘐𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘴𝘶𝘨𝘢𝘳, 𝘐 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘪𝘵 𝘶𝘱, 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺?" Even those who strive for a healthy diet are not given half a chance in the "𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦" food system of today. 🔗 Article on the adolescent diet study: https://lnkd.in/ePJurs9F... 🔗 Transcript of the House of Lords - session with Bite Back oral evidence: https://lnkd.in/eFYmVcQQ #ultraprocessedfood #upf #biteback #healthylifestyle #childrenshealth

New research reveals to which extent the food industry influences food regulations (or lack of). This new study explains how a the ultra-processed food (UPF) industry: ▶️ hides its harmful human and planetary health effects ▶️ provides its executives a privileged ‘seat at the table’ in global food governance decision making spaces. Example: look at FReSH (Food 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 for 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 and 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 initiative). Seeing the declared "saving-the-planet-and-the-people" purpose, who do you think sits on the board?  👉 100% (no less) manufacturers and retailers of ultra-processed foods. We wouldn't want Malboro setting the rules on tobacco would we ? Yet we let a handful of global ultra-processed food manufacturers run the show for food.  Time for (proper) reform: proper governance, transparency and accountability. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dPvbfU4B... #foodpolitics #foodregulations #foodgiants #who #un #bluewashing
