Public benefits are crucial and chaotic — too many forms, too much hassle. Residents are stuck in a data-entry loop, caseworkers are swamped, and no one’s happy. The GoInvo design team envisioned an integrated benefit application, where people can apply for all benefits at once, get helpful service suggestions, and have their benefits automatically renewed in a single stroke. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is inching closer and closer to an eligibility engine, much like the systems in Estonia that have been working well over the last decade. Here's what we're thinking when it comes to designing an eligibility engine: https://lnkd.in/e_ZgWuRn

What’s a little #healthcare fraud between friends? Just a casual $400 billion—that’s 10% of healthcare’s GDP. And don’t forget, there’s an extra 20% wasted for good measure. The dirty details at our #opensource visual report: https://lnkd.in/euJXV4jJ Two ways to fight fraud, waste, and abuse (FWA) = 1) Health Accuracy Receipt... that uses the patient as the fraud detection system and 2) FWA Tracker... a real-time fraud, waste, and abuse detection service which collects data from numerous sources, such as the Health Accuracy Receipt.

Had an amazing time at this week's #DesignForDignity conference! Thanks to Amy Heymans and Chris McCarthy for organizing a fantastic event. Thanks to the inspiring presenters who left me with lots to think about and kicked off what will (hopefully be!) many ongoing conversations: Juhan Sonin Stephen Konya Claudia Williams Alexandra Schweitzer Elizabeth Markle Joe Williams (I wish I'd gotten to see them all!). Thanks to Lindsey Mosby for a fantastic workshop on Aging in All the Best Ways. So glad I met María De la Vega and Alexandra Schweitzer who's work is not to be missed, and definitely sparked my creativity! Great to connect with friends like Lisa deBettencourt, MS HFID and Scott Mackie and get to enjoy Massachusetts College of Art and Design's fantastic facilities. It was a pleasure to be part of such an inspiring event that wrapped up with so many energizing calls to action!

I am grateful to Juhan Sonin and the amazing design team at GoInvo for the fearless work they do designing the future of healthcare. Juhan will say the things that everyone thinks but are reluctant to say. He is an inspiration and I can't wait to hear his talk at the Design for Dignity Conference!
🍪🍪🍪 Design for Dignity Conference Speaker Alert! 🍪🍪🍪 Juhan Sonin, one of my personal heroes for the work he does in taking an open source approach to designing the future of healthcare, will join us as a keynote speaker at the Design for Dignity Conference, June 4th and 5th in Boston. His talk "Right Problem, Right Now" will explore how effective problem identification can lead to breakthrough solutions in the near-term. Learn more about the Cookie Monster... er I mean, Juhan... Goinvo does such good work
"Who uses my health data?" If you thought you knew, think again. Hat tip to Danny Sands, MD, MPH for sharing (and to Dave deBronkart for amplifying) this remarkable graphic created by GoInvo to visualize all of the ways your #healthdata is shared. https://lnkd.in/eSw_4bEp And... * Medical bills are the leading source of bankruptcy in America, while most of the data transactions below have a flow of dollars attached. So while the patient is paying for those medical visits, your data is flowing through a multi-billion dollar revenue machine before you've walked out the door. * And when you are struggling just to gain timely and complete access to your own complete medical record, remember how many others had such easy access to your data.

Advising healthcare and technology leaders on emerging trends and best practices to better serve their populations.
We've always been fans of the work that Juhan Sonin and his team at GoInvo do to create thought-provoking graphics that explain complex concepts in healthcare (we actually worked with them for our provider-payer Convergence concept graphic - link shared in the comments). In their latest work, they show the multitude of ways that patient information is disseminated across different stakeholders following a clinical visit: https://lnkd.in/gni_xf6E As healthcare becomes more and more digitized, and a growing number of solution developers enter into business associates agreements (BAAs) to be HIPAA-compliant when handling these data, the branching web of where your information goes is getting harder and harder to track – it's a black box for pretty much everyone other than the IT team. This has made me increasingly nervous as a patient, but also as someone acutely aware of the plethora of vulnerabilities that these different solutions can potentially introduce into a system if not developed and governed properly. More and more organizations are looking to monetize, or simply find additional uses for, the reams of real-world healthcare data being collected every day. In tandem, my concern continues to grow around signing away my privacy rights on intake forms that include overly general language about accepting the fact my info can be shared with *any* of the organization's business associates (BAs). But what does that really mean? Just like with GDPR and the required option to specify which cookies you want to allow, it's high time we provide patients with more information about exactly what they are agreeing to when signing these forms. Maybe a "More Info" link if the intake form is digital, with a list of all the BAs that might touch my data. The average user wouldn't care, but it's an important piece of transparency that is currently lacking in the industry. Eventually, it would be great to have a "Required BAs" and "Recommended BAs" option or something to that effect, though I certainly won't hold my breath for that. What are your thoughts on this topic? Are you as uneasy with the standard, general language about sharing your data as I am? H/T Danny Sands, MD, MPH and the Society for Participatory Medicine for the original share. #healthcare #participatorymedicine #HIPAA #privacy #patientadvocacy
