Creating life changing opportunities through the power of work. 100% local 100% nonprofit.

About us

With the support of our entire community, we create life changing opportunities through training and the power of work. Goodwill SF Bay serves thousands of people in our community every year who are emerging from military service, incarceration, homelessness, recovery from addiction – or simply lacking education or job skills. We provide no cost career services, job training and connections to jobs at Goodwill or one of our 334 employer partners. Goodwill relies on a combination of material and financial donations. While many nonprofits must raise 100% of their operating and program budget, our employment social enterprise allows us to leverage every item donated through our 33 donation centers and purchased at one of our 34 stores, 2 warehouse outlets or online - to generate 85% of the revenue we need. This leaves a gap of 15% to be raised through philanthropy and government support.

Meet Jessica Wallace, an exceptional leader who embodies Goodwill San Francisco Bay's mission. Jessica's journey of conquering addiction, rebuilding relationships, and achieving professional success has made her an inspiration to those around her. Despite a gap in her employment history due to incarceration, Jessica was determined to achieve sobriety and create a new life for herself and her son. She quickly worked her way up to Retail Store Manager through the Bridges to Work program and has since been promoted to Senior Store Manager at our Pleasant Hill location. Jessica brings positivity to her work, advocating for others and encouraging her colleagues to ask for help when needed. Her achievements comes directly from her determination to succeed and we couldn't be happier to have her on the Goodwill SF Bay team.

As we celebrate #NationalTruckDriversWeek, we want to take a moment to honor the individuals who keep our community and organization moving forward. After facing incarceration in 2021, Valente needed a fresh start. Shortly after his release, he was hired at Goodwill. Valente’s determination paved the way for his new beginning. At Goodwill, Valente quickly embraced his role as a truck driver, drawing on his prior experience in handling heavy machinery for construction. Although he had some background in trucking, he expanded his skills at Goodwill. For instance, he found that driving our zero-emission battery electric trucks brought a unique learning curve, but Valente mastered them with enthusiasm. His daily routes, primarily to Mill Valley and occasionally to the more challenging San Rafael area, have honed his expertise, making him a dependable and skilled driver. Beyond his professional growth, Valente's dedication has profoundly impacted his personal life. Committed to his sobriety and recovery, he finds strength in the supportive atmosphere of his workplace. Valente also dedicates his time to volunteering at food banks, reflecting his desire to give back to the community. Valente’s journey is an inspiring example of how perseverance can lead to a path of success and fulfillment. We are so lucky to have him as a part of the Goodwill team. When Alfred moved to the Bay Area, he sought employment opportunities that aligned with his values and personal circumstances. Being disabled and visually impaired, he knew the importance of finding a workplace that could accommodate his needs. Alfred had previously worked at Goodwill and appreciated its commitment to hiring individuals with employment challenges. Remembering the organization's supportive environment, he turned to Goodwill once more. "When I moved here, I needed work. Given my degree in computer engineering technologies and my concern for the environment, Goodwill seemed like a perfect fit. They make accommodations for disabled people, and I love the idea of preventing waste by reusing and recycling old stuff." As an e-commerce associate at Goodwill, Alfred assesses the condition of donated electronics. This job requires reading tiny text and working with small tools and objects, which can be challenging for Alfred due to his vision impairment. His co-workers recognized this and custom-designed a tool to help him with his tasks, building a magnification arm that allows Alfred to zoom in on small text or parts of products that may be hard for him to see. Looking to the future, Alfred is committed to staying with Goodwill but also wishes to further his education. "I'd love to study environmental science, particularly focusing on technology and waste management. Our society produces a lot of technological waste, and I want to find ways to minimize its environmental impact." We’re proud of our mission to provide job services that help individuals transform their lives. But what does that really look like? At a recent Resource & Job Fair in Oakland, we had the honor of assisting hundreds of people with a step toward a brighter future: 224 job seekers signed up for new opportunities 68 participants registered with the CalCRG Re-Entry Program 3 veterans found support transitioning into civilian roles 65 job applications submitted 14 individuals participated in on-the-spot screenings 7 candidates immediately advanced to interviews These numbers are more than just statistics—they represent real people taking the opportunity to better their lives. As we celebrate Labor Day, let’s remember the power of work and the difference it can make. Thank you for standing with us in our mission to empower our community.
