🌍 **Embracing Sustainability, One Box at a Time** 🌱 This small but mighty machine—a cardboard perforator—is revolutionizing our approach to waste reduction and reuse. It transforms cardboard into fill and protection for our products, significantly reducing the need for bubble wrap. Just as our retail stores give donations a second life, we're extending the same principle to the packaging materials we receive. It's all about creating a circular future—turning what was once waste into opportunity. Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin #sustainability

Teresa has been working at Creative Learning Preschool since 2003, bringing stories to life for children with the help of her Tobii DynaVox and support from her Goodwill Job Coach. She also shares her love of reading as a volunteer at the Madison Children’s Museum through her weekly program, Tales with Teresa. [Opinions expressed here are my own] ‘Memory believes before knowing remembers.’

Sunday morning in Verona, Wisconsin, and work has started before the store doors open. Twenty Goodwill workers have arrived for their monthly meeting where sales and production numbers, quality control, safety, and other shop floor issues are discussed. Verona is one of fourteen stores that constitute the economic engine of Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin’s (CEO Michele Harris) mission programs, a division I am honored to serve as director. Broadly unknown to most shoppers, Goodwill’s supportive employment, transitional jobs, community services, and housing programs are made possible due to revenue generated through a complex regional retail network skillfully managed by Matthew Weiss and his team. But I joined this breakfast time meeting to talk mission, not operations, and both strong coffee and big ideas were brewing. The room was filled with personality. Some faces wore smiles. Some wore determination. In between announcements covering policy, procedures, and training, music was played, Latin was spoken, and the story of Goodwill’s origins and its connection to certain moments and movements in American history was shared. We celebrated a leadership opportunity. We discussed “round up” performance. We talked about life in and outside of work. People spoke with pride and purpose. It was a thoughtful discussion of mission and a little something of its meaning to the people who make it possible. I loved everything about the way Store Manager Patricia Edmunds organized this meeting, helping as it did to bring greater depth and meaning to the workplace. It is my belief that the best material outcomes typically happen when imagination meets hard work, and what I heard this morning from line workers, cashiers, and managers supports this view. And while the interests of customers, employees, and program participants might at times predictably diverge, they are inextricably linked when we consider meaningful community and business outcomes. With Goodwill’s unique model, the dream of ‘good housing, good work, and good support’ is ultimately dependent on store performance, and as creators of value, Team Verona has clearly put their shoulder to the wheel. And they have done so with profound impact. To be sure, as the result of their collective labor, a job, a home, and hope may now exist for someone who previously lacked any of this. I left Verona feeling encouraged. Encouraged that mission and stores were playing on the same field and about to do something important. Something deeply held and embraced. Something powerful. #GWSCWIMission #MissionMorningMud #Commoncause #goodwillworkers Thanks to Assistant Store Manager Emily C. Kordus for documeting our morning with great pictures.
