One of the biggest challenges in mental health is the stigma associated with the illness. Many still view it as a sign of weakness or a character flaw, which can prevent those suffering from seeking help. World Mental Health Day aims to break this stigma by encouraging open conversations about mental health, sharing personal stories, and educating the public about the realities of mental illness. By normalizing these discussions, we can create a more supportive environment for everyone. Here at Goodwill of Greater Washington, we take pride in ensuring our employees' mental health is at the forefront of our work. By offering many benefits through our Employee Assistance Program and RISE Coaching, Team Members can enjoy their time working without feeling the burden of everyday life struggles. Here are ways Goodwill of Greater Washington contributes positively to the mental health of its Team Members. #Goodwill #DCGoodwill #MentalHealth #WorldMentalHealthDay #Community #Nonprofit #Local #Support #EndtheStigma #MentalHealthMatters

Please join our friends at Goodwill Industries of the Southern Rivers in helping the countless families who have been negatively impacted by the Hurricane. The nonprofit is accepting donations in-store and online.
As many of you are aware, Hurricane Helene has profoundly impacted countless families in the Southeast. In our commitment to change lives, we will be donating a portion of our sales to provide support to those affected by the Hurricane. For the month of October, Goodwill Southern Rivers, in cooperation with the Southeastern Association of Goodwill’s, will be hosting a round-up at the register campaign to support victims of Hurricane Helene. The campaign will be activated at all stores, and GoodwillSR will match all round-up donations dollar for dollar. Thank you for your compassion and support as we come together to help our community during this challenging time. Those interested in donating online can also do so at goodwillsr.org. #GoodwillSR💙 #HurricaneHeleneRelief #CommunitySupport #DonateForACause #DisasterRelief

🎉 NOW OPEN! 🎉 Today, our new Donation Express, located at 5210 Langston Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia, opens its doors to the community! With this expanded footprint, our nonprofit hopes to offer local residents another destination to donate apparel and household goods that have outgrown their homes. Every donation to Goodwill helps fund jobs, job training, and educational services for people facing barriers to employment right here in the DMV. In addition to jobs and job training opportunities, Goodwill operates two free adult charter high school campuses called The Goodwill Excel Center DC. Donor support for Goodwill is also good for the planet. We reduce the amount of material sent to local landfills by operating a sustainability center that recycles plastic bags, glass, cardboard, books, computers, and more! "Being the daughter of two first-generation immigrants, I really treasure the values and the culture that they were able to instill in me. And, I take great pride in being able to pass that on and instill that for my daughter so she doesn't forget where she comes from." As Goodwill recognizes #HispanicHeritageMonth, we're proud to introduce you to Gissell Valladares, the passionate, purpose-driven, and people-first leader who manages our Liberia Avenue—Manassas, VA location. #Goodwill #DCGoodwill #Community #MondayMotivation #Celebrate

***Fashion Runway to Impact: Students, Style, and Purpose Unite at the NABA Regional Conference*** Last Saturday, NABA continued to ignite inspiration within our communities, and there was no better place for it than Howard University’s iconic campus. With over 1,200 students (high school and college) and professionals in attendance, it was a day filled with connection—linking students with industry opportunities and hearing and learning from remarkable leaders including William M. Washington III, MIKE ELLISON, Guylaine Saint Juste, and Trevor W. Williams, CPA (he/him). For me, the day held personal significance. It wasn’t just about sharing knowledge but reconnecting with students, friends and alumni, standing on the grounds of my alma mater, and walking with purpose in another meaningful fashion show. The energy from the conversations with students reminded me of why these moments are so transformative—an exchange of ideas, vision, and future possibilities. Speaking of fashion shows... I've participated in many fashion shows —from church events to college campuses like NCCU and Howard, to industry-wide fashion events —and it felt like a full-circle moment to be back at Cramton Auditorium at HU for another fashion show with purpose. Collaborating with NABA and Goodwill was a special experience, made even more meaningful by the mission behind it. How do I know there are hidden gems at Goodwill? Because I've purchased some nice items from Goodwill, and my husband and I frequently donate many of our clothes and shoes to Goodwill in Bowie, MD. This weekend was no exception! The red dress I had on in this fashion show holds more than just fabric—it carries the milestone of when I made Principal at Deloitte six years ago. Now, six years later as it finds its way to Goodwill, who knows? It just might inspire the next person who wears it to step into their own milestone moment. That’s the beauty of giving back—passing on inspiration one item at a time. The pink dress is also a favorite that my husband gifted me for my birthday a few years ago, and it's time for it to shine on someone else...because sharing style is caring. This fashion show was truly unique. It was the first time I modeled alongside my husband, and it was also a privilege to meet Catherine Meloy, President and CEO for Goodwill of Greater Washington, who has made such an impact through her leadership and work. A huge thank you to the entire NABA team for making this regional conference such a resounding success. Your tireless dedication is shaping not just individual futures but the collective growth of our communities. Also, a huge thanks to my colleague Thalia Smith and our Deloitte professionals for hosting another successful MADE event with high school students! #NABA #HBCU #FutureLeaders #Networking #FashionForACause #StudentSuccess #FashionForGood #GoodwillGlowUp #PassItOn

People often ask what we do with the books Goodwill doesn't sell in our nonprofit's retail stores. The truth? We keep them out of local landfills by providing them to ThriftBooks! More than 3.5 million pounds of books are sold online through Thriftbooks or recycled into post-consumer paper. That means surplus books not only fund our mission but also protect the planet through the circular economy. #WednesdayWisdom #Goodwill #Sustainability #Recycle #Recycling #DCGoodwill #Thrift #Nonprofit
