Building pathways to independence through personal development and the power of work.

About us

Here at Goodwill of Greater Detroit, we build pathays to independence through personal development and the power of work. Founded in 1921, Goodwill Detroit has delivered best-in-class personal and workforce development programming to Metro Detroit returning citizens, youth, and residents who have been chronically under or unemployed, and those living with mental illness or intellectual/developmental disability. What many people don't know about us, is we have a long and successful history with social entrepreneurship outside of our fabled thrift stores. We operate 2 wholly-owned subsidiaries, Goodwill Integrated Solutions, a Tier 1 automotive assembly and kitting business, and Goodwill’s Green Works, providing asset recovery and industrial recycling services. We use these businesses to generate profits that may be reinvested in the mission of the organization, long-term employment opportunities for trainees with significant employment challenges, and transitional work experience for trainees needing time on-the-job before transitioning to competitive employment. There is a lot of good going on here! Employment is more than a paycheck - it's a resounding victory: for the individual, for their family, for their community. When jobs thrive, communities thrive. We know this because we've seen and celebrated it here for 100 years.

  • Days like these bring us joy and pride. More than 200 people came together to celebrate this year’s honorees at the annual Flip the Script Celebration of Transformation. The event was more than a celebration. It was a testament to the strength, resilience and courage of individuals who have broken through seemingly insurmountable barriers to turn their lives around and take control of their futures. Honorees shared powerful stories of how they moved from hopeless to hopeful, from incarceration to their first job, from homelessness to their first home, from school drop out to college student. Each success story was (and is) a reminder that no matter where you start, you have the power to rewrite your future. 🌟 For over 20 years, Flip the Script has been a lifeline for those facing unimaginable challenges, providing life skills, workforce development and paid on-the-job training. Through this program, participants don’t just learn—they transform. With locations in Wayne and Oakland counties, Flip the Script offers the tools and support needed to break through barriers and build a new story, one of hope and opportunity. At Goodwill of Greater Detroit, we couldn’t be more proud of every individual who took that first brave step toward a brighter future. Congratulations, all! 🎉 Let’s continue to uplift and celebrate these incredible journeys. Learn more about how Flip the Script is changing lives: https://lnkd.in/eFHmurDz

  • Labor Day is especially important for us at Goodwill of Greater Detroit. This holiday honors the contributions of American workers who have built our nation’s strength, prosperity and well-being. Established as a federal holiday in 1894, Labor Day began as local celebrations of parades, speeches, and festivals recognizing the vital role of trade and labor organizations—a tradition that continues today as we celebrate the dedication of America’s workforce.   For over a century, Goodwill of Greater Detroit has been part of this legacy, empowering individuals in our community through job training, career placement and employment opportunities.   Founded in 1921 by Reverend John E. Martin, we began by providing jobs to elderly and physically disabled residents, helping them gain independence and purpose. Our services have evolved with the times to include transformative support for metro Detroiters living with intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illness and those who are justice-involved, but our mission remains the constant: to build pathways to independence through personal development and the power of work.   As we celebrate Labor Day, we reflect on the incredible journey of American workers and our shared commitment to building a brighter future. Thank you for being a part of our mission.   Happy Labor Day from Goodwill of Greater Detroit!

  • Today, on National Nonprofit Day, we’re celebrating the incredible impact your support has on transforming lives. Meet Chris, a 28-year-old Detroit native who found a life-changing opportunity through our Skilled Trades Academy’s Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) program. Chris has always been dedicated to his community, but when he learned about our EVSE program, he saw a chance to be part of something even bigger—a future powered by clean energy. Through hands-on training, Chris is learning to repair the powerful EV chargers that are essential to the growth of electric vehicles. This program is giving him the skills he needs to step into a new career and contribute to a sustainable future. By supporting our programs, you’re helping individuals like Chris build brighter futures, one skill at a time. The impact is real, and it’s changing lives. On this National Nonprofit Day, let’s continue to make a difference together. Donate today at goodwilldetroit.org/donate and be the reason someone finds hope and a bright future.

  • A heartfelt thank you to the Barton Malow Foundation!   We are grateful to the amazing Barton Malow team for once again including Goodwill of Greater Detroit in its annual Barton Malow Foundation Community Week.   Since 2014, during the first week in August, Barton Malow team members dedicate time and service to over 80 pre-planned volunteer activities at various charitable organizations across the county. This program is a shining example of generosity and kindness, and we are fortunate to be a recipient.     This year, Detroit-area Barton Malow team members arrived at Goodwill of Greater Detroit retail locations ready to support our efforts by helping us sort donated goods and stock store shelves. We appreciated the help and we had fun too.   Thank you for your continued partnership. Your commitment to giving back inspires us all!   Learn more about the Barton Malow Foundation’s “Community Week” and their incredible work: https://lnkd.in/ezJ7rzAx

Our thrift stores are iconic, but what many people don’t know is all the good that happens because of our stores.   Ninety-two cents of every dollar spent at a Goodwill of Greater Detroit retail location goes toward personal development, and employment and training programs for metro Detroiters, including those with disabilities. That means when you shop at Goodwill, you are not only getting bargains and helping keep goods out of landfills, but you are actually helping members of your community gain independence and live happier, more fulfilled lives.   Thanks to all who support us and a special thanks to Candice Williams and the The Detroit News for telling our story.
