About us
The Governors’ Climate and Forests (GCF) Task Force works to protect tropical forests, reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and promote realistic pathways to forest-maintaining rural development. Founded in 2008 by nine governors from Brazil, Indonesia, and the United States, the GCF Task Force has grown to over 43 states and provinces in eleven countries worldwide (Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Spain, and the United States). More than 1/3 of the world's tropical forests are contained within GCF Task Force member states—including all of the legal Brazilian Amazon, 85 percent of the Peruvian Amazon, and more than 60 percent of Indonesia's tropical forests. Our subnational collaboration enhances the critical opportunities subnational governments hold for policy innovation and leadership by supporting jurisdictional programs to protect forests, reduce emissions, and enhance livelihoods. The GCF Task Force harnesses a network approach to governance across multiple scales and sectors—incorporating voices from government, private sector, producers, indigenous peoples and local communities. Our mission is to empower a coalition of subnational jurisdictions and their partners to implement innovative jurisdiction-wide programs for sustainable low emissions development built upon improved forest governance, novel technical and financial mechanisms, enhances opportunities for local communities and indigenous peoples, and ongoing leadership in national, regional, and international climate policy forums.

Governors' Climate & Forests Task Force reposted this
The last few days at the Oslo Tropical Forest Forum (#OTFF2024) and the REDD+ Knowledge Day have been full of engaging exchanges on jurisdictional approaches to protecting tropical forests, advancing partnerships between national and subnational governments, indigenous territories, local communities, the private sector, and social society. Overall funding remains a fraction of the estimated need ($500B/year), but governments, including Governors' Climate & Forests Task Force members Acre, Para, and Tocantins, Brazil, and members of the GCF Task Force Global Committee of Indigenous Peopes and Local Communities have presented their existing REDD+ programs and strategies and are ready to partner with donors, results-based payments, and the private sector. Key take aways: 🏆 Indigenous Peoples and local communities are the best defenders of their forests and we all need to learn from their long history of forest governance and recognize the results! 🌎 Subnational states and provinces can help drive ambitious approaches to a #NewForestEconomy, both in support of national strategies and in the absence of national action. But, they need support, just as national governments do. 🤝 Funding and implementation partners are eager to support action on the ground, and can use support to engage with governments and communities. ⬆️ Scale is needed, both in terms of jurisdictional design and implementation, but also in terms of opening access and flow of funding. This is try of all funding mechanisms, including through voluntary and compliance market approaches. 💪 Ambition exists, and needs to be encouraged by opening up access to partnerships and finance. ⚖️ Organized crime is a major driver of instability, abuse, and deforestation. Jurisdictional forest programs need a law enforcement component, better use of technology and 🛰️ monitoring, and alternative livelihoods strategies to develop a New Forest Economy that truly values standing forests more than cleared land. 🚦These discussions must continue, deepen, and accelerate at upcoming events like the GCF Task Force annual meeting in Ucayali, Peru, #COP16 in Cali, and leading toward #COP30 in Belem next year. https://lnkd.in/gc4gjbm5 The GCF Task Force is honored to participate in this year’s #OTFF2024. Many thanks to NICFI - Norway's International Climate and Forest Initiative and Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation for hosting and leading the discussions, and for the important partnerships you have sustained over so many years. The Governors' Climate and Forests Task Force (GCFtf) network recently hosted a major event in Indonesia: our Regional Meeting on "Exploring Bioeconomy: A Sustainable Economic Frontier,", and delegates from Brazil and Indonesia participated in the South-South Knowledge Exchange (SSKE) held in Balikpapan and Bali, organized by The World Bank. At the meetings in Indonesia, discussions centered around leveraging the nation's rich biodiversity for sustainable economic development. Subsequently, the SSKE event emphasized international collaboration and knowledge sharing on conservation strategies across Brazil, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo - countries that harbor over half of the world's forests! #TropicalForests #GCFtf #KnowledgeExchange #WorldWaterForum #WorldBank 🌍🌳

🌿🤝 On this World Environment Day, we proudly celebrate the work of our network's 43 subnational governments across 11 countries. Preserving over a third of the world's forests is no easy task! The GCFtf member jurisdictions have been at the forefront of subnational leadership in tropical forest conservation in the past 15 years, demonstrating the power and potential of local governments to influence global environmental outcomes. Their initiatives support sustainable development and provide critical protections for Indigenous communities, rural communities, and natural resources. In our extensive network, we facilitate meaningful dialogue and action among governments, NGOs, and community leaders, driving forward policies that balance ecological preservation with economic needs. The enduring commitment to environmental stewardship showcases how collaborative efforts at the subnational level can lead to significant global impacts. As our network lives through another World Environment Day, let us recommit to supporting these vital efforts and fostering partnerships that will ensure a healthier, more sustainable planet for future generations! #WorldEnvironmentDay #GCFtf #EnvironmentalConservation #Sustainability #SustainableDevelopment #TropicalForests
