As we acknowledge Veterans Day, this is a time for us to recognize and express our gratitude to those who have served our country, ensuring the safety and freedom we enjoy every day. To the veterans among us, we extend our heartfelt thanks for your service. Your commitment and sacrifice have made a lasting impact, and we are grateful for the selfless example you set within our organization, your families, and in our communities.

Dr. Arthur C. Parker, a member of the Seneca Nation and director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester, New York, was an early advocate for establishing an "American Indian Day." His efforts persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to dedicate a day to honor Native Americans. This sparked a broader movement to raise awareness of Indigenous cultures and issues. In 1915, the American Indian Association formally endorsed a plan for American Indian Day during its annual congress. That year, Rev. Sherman Coolidge, the association's president, called on the nation to observe this day. Years later, in 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed a joint resolution designating November as National Native American Indian Heritage Month. In 2008, the language was expanded to include the contributions of Alaska Natives. This month, we invite everyone to reflect on the past, present, and future contributions of Native American Indian and Alaskan Native communities to our society.

This October, we are proud to join in recognizing National Disability Employment Awareness Month. “Our theme in 2024, ‘Access to Good Jobs for All,’ speaks to our commitment to expand the number of employment opportunities for people with disabilities and the quality of those opportunities,” stated Assistant Secretary for Disability Employment Policy Taryn M. Williams. “Good jobs change lives and all workers — including disabled people — deserve the opportunity to prepare for success in high-quality, good-paying jobs in workplaces free of discrimination.” People with disabilities bring a wide range of talents, perspectives, and skills that contribute to our success. By promoting a culture of inclusion, we open the doors to greater innovation and collaboration for all.

Today marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month to be celebrated through October 15th. We welcome this time to honor the vibrant cultures, rich histories, and significant contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities nationwide and within our own organization. The timing of Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American nations dating back to 1921. The kickoff date of September 15 was chosen because it coincides with the day five central American countries declared their independence from Spain - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Join us as we honor the cultural legacy of Hispanic and Latino Americans and celebrate the impact of their talents, traditions, and values.

"You will remember this day as long as you live." - Dan Rather These were the words spoken by Mr. Rather as he opened the Nightly News on September 11, 2001. Those that experienced this tragedy will surely never forget and the proclamation of Patriot Day ensures it will continue to be acknowledged for generations to come. While this is a day of remembrance, it also provides an opportunity to focus on unity and the importance of supporting one another, both in our professional and personal lives. Take a moment today to reflect on that day which reminds us of the strength of our country, the importance of our loved ones, and the steadfastness of the communities we hold dear.

In 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, S. 475, creating a federal holiday to commemorate Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth), marking the anniversary of the last African American slaves being free. Last week, President Biden shared the following to those gathered at a special concert celebrating the holiday. "Juneteenth, as a federal holiday, is meant to breathe new life into the very essence of America. To make sure all Americans feel the power of this day and the progress we can make as a country; to choose love over hate, unity over disunion, and progress over retreat." GovStrive honors Juneteenth and its celebration of African American history and heritage.
