November is National Family Caregivers month, and it’s a caregiver’s duty to protect their elderly loved ones. Unfortunately, older adults are often victims of banking and financial fraud. According to the FTC, older Americans lost up to 61.5 billion in fraud in 2023! Here are some tips for seniors and caregivers to prevent financial fraud: 1. Keep an eye on bank and credit card accounts. Review them for any suspicious transactions. 2. Review credit reports periodically for any unauthorized accounts that were opened or unexplained debt. 3. Create awareness by educating your elderly loved ones on the warning signs of fraud—including calls asking for their account information, social security number, passwords, or other protected information. Please report any fraud to your financial institution and the local office of Adult Protective Services.
