Grassroots is here for you with free, 24-hour support via our hotline (410-531-6677), 988 (phone, chat or text) or walk-in counseling at our location at 8990 Old Annapolis Road, Suite A in Columbia! We provide free, 24-hour crisis intervention, mental health, substance use disorder, housing support, suicide prevention and other services and resources. Individuals can receive phone, walk-in or Mobile Crisis Team support with a variety of situations, including: psychiatric crises like depression, isolation, anxiety or suicidal ideation; drug use or withdrawal; homelessness or housing insecurity; access to necessary assistance like food and hygiene items; connection to resources or treatment, and more. You can also reach out to us because you feel lonely, anxious, depressed or even suicidal. You may just need a listening ear. Today is Stress Awareness Day. Stress management is necessary for maintaining physical and mental health, fostering healthy relationships and preventing burnout. Learning to cope with our stress and finding healthy ways to deal with these situations can go a long way in living a healthy and positive life. It is totally normal to need help when dealing with stress or other mental health concerns. Talking to someone can be really beneficial in helping to manage everyday issues, as well as acute emotional concerns from highly stressful situations. The Grassroots Day Resource Center needs your support to ensure members of our community are fed. Please consider signing up to provide a meal for and serve 80 community members on Monday, November 18 from 1:30-4 p.m. Organizations would need to supply a meal and provide 3 people to serve the meal. The meal can be as simple as pizza with drinks, a veggie and simple dessert. Please email Kathy at kathyp@grassrootscrisis.org if you can help or if you have questions. We have an ongoing need for support for meals on the 3rd Monday of every odd month. Thank you so much to the SECU Credit Union team who came to the Grassroots Day Resource Center for their day of service! This awesome group helped clean the center, including mopping floors, wiping tables and cleaning bathrooms. They also folded laundry, stocked showers and helped set up the kitchen to serve our guests. One of their volunteers even stayed to help support guests with laundry services. We are so thankful for their support! The Day Resource Center helps support homeless, housing insecure and low income individuals in our community. Guests can receive hot meals, as well as access laundry, showers, case management, resources and a food/clothing pantry. Grassroots Executive Director Dr. Mariana Izraelson, Psy.D., LCADC, PMP was invited to visit the White House today as part of a special Día de Los Muertos celebration. The president and Dr. Biden invited members of the Latino community to take a special tour as well add pictures of departed loved ones to the White House's ofrenda in the East Wing. Día de Los Muertos is a rich cultural celebration in the Latino community that is meant to reunite the living and the dead, and is often viewed as a celebration of life for loved ones who have passed away. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. The Howard County Office of Transportation and the Downtown Columbia Partnership are teaming up to host the fourth annual Cranksgiving this Saturday, November 2nd to benefit Grassroots! Cranksgiving is designed to provide active recreation for local residents, raise awareness about the county's bikable pathway system, and generate food items for individuals and families who visit Grassroots in need. Participants will bike from their homes on Saturday picking up non-perishable food items along the way from the grocery store of their choice. Drop off will be at the Plaza at The Mall in Columbia (near Seasons 52) in Downtown Columbia from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Registration is FREE; you only need to purchase the food you'll donate. The first 100 registrants will receive a t-shirt. New This Year: Columbia Association Villages, along with any other interested communities, are invited to compete to see who can donate the most. Each village will have a designated table, staffed by a volunteer provided by the Downtown Columbia Partnership, where residents can drop off their contributions. At the end of the event, the winning village will be announced based on the total donations received.
