During Construction Inclusion Week, we’re proud to highlight our efforts to build a more inclusive industry through partnerships like the ACE Mentor Program and by visiting schools across the country to inspire future industry leaders. Today, we’re highlighting Demetrius Moore, Field Engineer at Gray and proud graduate of North Carolina A&T, one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) we visited this fall. During his time at NCA&T, Demetrius interned with Gray South Atlantic, and now he’s thriving as a full-time member of our team. Learn more about his HBCU experience and how it was instrumental in shaping his construction career: 🏗️ How did your experience at North Carolina A&T influence your career path in construction? "North Carolina A&T showed me that as a Black man, there are plenty of opportunities out there. Our major put us in front of companies through career fairs, class visits, and even our own construction management career fair. These opportunities made us feel like we belong in this field. Being involved in clubs helped me network with people who looked like me and are in the positions I want to hold one day. Witnessing Black excellence gave me the drive to succeed in construction. Being in rooms with successful Black professionals made me feel like, ‘I’m supposed to be here, and I will be here one day.’" 🤝 What led you to join the team at Gray? "It all started at a career fair. Gray stood out because of the passion and consistency Vanessa Pearyer showed in recruiting me. She explained Gray’s core values and purpose and answered all my questions. I wanted to be part of a family-oriented company that cares for its employees. When I interned at Gray in 2023, I experienced the family culture firsthand. I learned we can work hard and have fun, and being around like-minded people motivated me. Now, as a Field Engineer, I’m gaining on-site experience that will help me become a well-rounded Project Manager soon." 👷 What advice would you give to students at HBCUs starting their careers in construction? "To my fellow HBCU students, seek out what you want, ask questions, and absorb everything like a sponge. The beauty of construction is there’s always something new to learn every day. For Construction Inclusion Week, we want to shed light on the importance of our Employee-Driven Cooperatives (EDC), particularly Groundbreaking Women, and the vital role this group plays within Gray. Since its launch in 2016, Groundbreaking Women has helped create an inclusive environment by empowering women, driving change, and building future leaders. "Ensuring the inclusion of women at all levels at Gray helps foster innovation, drives better decision-making, and enhances overall organizational performance. At Gray, we are committed to creating an environment where women feel valued, empowered, and supported in their careers," says Abby Reynolds, HR Compliance Specialist and Groundbreaking Women Steering Committee Co-chair. "This involves the development and participation in Gray’s EDC and Groundbreaking Women group, which offers professional development opportunities, cross-company collaboration, and a platform to give back to our community.
