In the medical field, trauma-informed care is not just a best practice—it’s essential. Patients often carry the invisible weight of past trauma, which can significantly impact their physical and mental health outcomes. By adopting a trauma-informed approach, healthcare providers can recognize trauma’s complex manifestations, fostering trust and delivering care that is sensitive to the patient’s emotional and psychological needs. This approach not only improves patient outcomes but also enhances the clinician-patient relationship, reducing the risk of re-traumatization. Mental health professionals, how can your peers in other medical fields better identify signs of trauma in patients? Share your thoughts below.

Mental health is not just about the mind—research shows that it profoundly affects the body. Research from Deloitte and Meharry School of Global Health shows that untreated mental health issues can increase the risk of conditions like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. When mental health professionals collaborate with other medical specialties to focus on the whole person, the result is more effective, long-lasting treatment plans that promote both mental and physical health.

A conversation with a doula: "Childbirth can be incredibly empowering, but for some women, it can also be triggering—especially for those with a history of sexual assault. It's helpful for the medical staff to be made aware of any past traumas, as they may resurface during labor. There are so many triggers that can come up unexpectedly, from physical exams to the loss of control in the moment." The reality is that births rarely follow a set script, and this unpredictability can contribute to psychological birth trauma. According to the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, childbirth-related PTSD affects 6.6 million mothers and 1.7 million co-parents worldwide annually, making it a substantial public health concern. How can medical teams, doulas, and mental health professionals better support trauma survivors during and after childbirth? Let’s start the conversation.
