About us

The Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA) is a nonprofit corporation created in 1963 to support the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. Currently GLAZA operates seven essential functions for the City-owned Zoo, including fundraising for the Zoo's programs and capital projects, membership, volunteers, marketing and public relations, special events and site rentals, concessions and retail and publications. GLAZA also works to nurture a commitment to wildlife and conservation support, as well as to foster community support for the L.A. Zoo, its mission and programs. GLAZA and the L.A. Zoo share a common mission: To serve the community, we will create an environment for recreation and discovery; inspire an appreciation of wildlife through exhibitry and education; ensure the highest level of animal welfare; and support programs that preserve biodiversity and conserve natural habitat. We also share a vision: We will leverage the diverse resources of Los Angeles to be an innovator for the global zoo community, creating dynamic experiences to connect people and animals.

  • In honor of International Vulture Awareness Day (IVAD; Sept. 7), the Los Angeles Zoo hosted an evening event featuring an expert panel on vulture conservation. The event, “Condor Cliffhangers: Adventures Saving the California Condor,” brought much needed awareness to the importance of vulture species, the role they play in the ecosystem, and their dire need for conservation and protection. Moderated by the Zoo’s Director of Conservation, Dr. Jake Owens, the panel discussion featured The Peregrine Fund President and CEO Chris Parish and L.A. Zoo Animal Keepers Chandra David and Mike Clark, who are longtime members of the Zoo’s California condor care team. The California condor is a vulture species that the Los Angeles Zoo has been working to recover since the 1980s, when there were only 22 individuals remaining on Earth. The Zoo’s work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s California Condor Recovery Program continues today and has been integral to the rebound of wild populations. In addition to the work with California condors, the L.A. Zoo is actively working to conserve six species of African vultures through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) African Vulture Program. • RECORD-BREAKING ALERT! ‼️ A historic 17 California condor chicks hatched at the L.A. Zoo during this year's breeding season– all of which will be candidates for release into the wild as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) California Condor Recovery Program (CCRP). The 17th and final chick of the season hatched in June, and all are thriving. The previous record of 15 California condor chicks hatched at the L.A. Zoo in one season was set in 1997. “This is a historic moment for the CCRP and the Zoo’s animal care team,” said Rose Legato, Curator of Birds. “Our condor team has raised the bar once again in the collaborative effort to save America’s largest flying bird from extinction." • The L.A. Zoo is thrilled to announce a new exhibit at Los Angeles World Airports's Tom Bradley International Terminal as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums's Wildlife Trafficking Alliance (WTA) campaign, "I Travel for Wildlife." The campaign aims at eliminating the trade of illegal wildlife and wildlife products that contribute to the decrease of wildlife populations across the world. The exhibit features authentic contraband confiscated and donated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife -- all items are commonly available to travelers overseas, such as jewelry, accessories, purses, and decorative items. Each example serves as a sobering reminder of the toll exacted by the illegal wildlife trade on endangered species and ecosystems. Travelers will leave this exhibit more informed so they can buy informed when abroad. More information can be found at https://lnkd.in/gU3buiYT.
