New Story published at Greater Than Six. ----- - More Than A Pilot - "They wouldn't even remember me. This was my chance! I knew there was a short window in time when they would have almost no memories of me, and my death would not torture them or cause them harm. Someone could lie to them and say I died of a tragic accident. I wrote notes about how the person who found my body should explain it to my children. My dying wish was for them to not know who I was, nor what I was going through when I pulled the trigger. They’d be fine, I told myself. Better this way. Much better. This was my logic as I drove to a pawn shop to find a gun one bright, sunny day." One of the most insidious threats to our Aviation community is found flashing on your screen. We're better than that. /// The last few years have seen the rise of social media accounts run by “aviation influencers” who claim real world expertise. These commentators can be the most dangerous when spreading misinformation and theories about aviation accidents, usually within hours of the incident and well before investigators are even able to reach the scene. /// Speculation is most damaging to our community when it involves the mental health of the flight crew involved in the incident. Insinuation that crew member motivation included declining mental illness or ideations of suicide is outside the lane of any without direct knowledge of the facts. To engage in this behavior in a public forum is Unethical and Unprofessional, and we should call it out as such. /// Imagine yourself as a loved one of the affected flight crew, reading how online “experts” believe your child/parent/sibling was at fault in a fatal accident for something as subjective as their mental state. Worse yet, federal agencies will not release the objective truth until at least a year later, when actual expert investigators complete their task and the record is set straight. /// We are strong when we build each other up. We are weak when we tear ourselves apart. /// Greater Than Six is your safe harbor. No comments, no likes, no retweets. You, your thoughts, and a receptive community of aviation peers. Blinking Cursor.... Blank Page.... >>> I have a story to tell, value to add to this community, and limited time to write. Where do I start? >>> Here are 5 introspective prompts to help you begin: 1. Write about the first time you looked up and dreamed of flying. How does the reality of working in aviation compare to those childhood dreams? 2. Share a personal narrative about a time when your work in aviation strained your personal relationships. How did you reconcile the two? 3. Due to unforeseen circumstances, there might have been times you've been medically or administratively grounded. Write about the emotional and mental journey during this period. 4. Dive into the stigma associated with discussing mental health issues in the aviation industry. Share a time when you or someone you know felt hesitant to speak out about their struggles. 5. Share a story from your life as an Aviator that most passengers might be unaware of – particularly moments of emotional or mental stress. Crew Resource Management is not as effective as you think. It is limited in scope to operational activities in the flight deck. The time is now to expand CRM for a new generation of aviators. /// Definition: The effective use of all available resources for flight crew personnel to assure a safe and efficient operation, reduce error, avoid stress and increase efficiency. This concept assumes the personnel involved are the control population, unsusceptible to variables outside the confines of their duties. What about the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of the flight crew themselves? Could that possibly degrade the effectiveness of their role in the CRM process? /// True CRM includes the whole person concept when understanding flight crew and their behavior. Aviation can be a lonely place, especially in large-scale operations that build schedules around randomized crew pairings. Focused flight crew training is needed in the following areas: - Rapport building amongst crew members - Recognition of declining health factors - Supportive, non-punitive health intervention /// Crew Resource Management has been instrumental in improving aviation safety. The question is: What comes next? At Greater Than Six, we support industry leaders who focus on the issues of tomorrow, from academia, corporations, and government. Burnout | Fatigue | Mental Health are among the many challenges that require new concepts that add to proven solutions. Here's to building the future. Anxiety, depression, and loneliness can feel like dark, ominous thunderclouds closing in. Seek shelter to weather the storm. /// Here at Greater Than Six, the principle of anonymity can provide the space to explore the mental and emotional peaks and valleys of your aviation journey. Gather your thoughts, put them to paper, and share with a peer group that parallels your lived experience. Our philosophy parallels the principles of like-minded anonymous support groups. These programs have been successful for decades and provide a simple framework from which to operate. We share the common goal of helping others through the dark times and realize their full potential. /// Empathy works, but requires participants to feel included, respected, and secure. Greater Than Six draws on established traditions to build that same safe space for the aviation community. We are stronger together. The darkness loses its grip in the face of compassion.
