In the face of the climate emergency, urban areas are grappling with rising temperatures and extreme weather, impacting not only our environment but also the daily lives of city dwellers. #NaturebasedSolutions (NBS) have emerged as a key response, embraced by #European policies and now central to local urban agendas in #Italy. These solutions harness natural processes to offer a range of environmental, social, and economic benefits, but to truly drive impactful change, we must accurately assess and quantify these advantages. 🗓On the 14th of November, LAND hosts a panel discussion featuring researchers and experts to share the project's ambitions and initial insights, while also exchanging experiences with other initiatives across Italy. This dialogue not only enhances our understanding of NBS but also positions #Prato, #GreenInCities’ Italian pilot site, as a lighthouse city committed to transforming urban spaces to combat climate, ecological, and social challenges. By leveraging new technologies and engaging citizens, we aim to empower city makers to tailor solutions that address the unique climate, ecological, and cultural needs of their communities.

The session will explore how Nature-Based Solutions (#NBS) are being used to address climate challenges in urban areas. It will focus on methodologies for measuring the environmental, social, and economic benefits of NBS, as well as best practices for integrating them into urban planning. The event will also introduce the GreenInCities project (2024-2027), funded by Horizon Europe, which is developing innovative technologies to engage citizens and urban professionals in the co-design of sustainable city solutions. Italian architects attending the event will be eligible for 3 CPD points (CFP). GreenInCities aims to build a new co-creative, integrated, and collaborative approach for planning urban climate regeneration in deprived and dysfunctional areas through the development and testing of innovative co-analysis, co-designing, and co-monitoring tools and methodologies for people, technicians, and decision-makers. 🌿 Urbana in #Cork for the GreenInCities project! 🌍 Last week, our team had the pleasure of visiting Cork, Ireland, as part of the GreenInCities Horizon project, which aims to reintroduce green spaces and foster sustainable, inclusive urban environments. We had the opportunity to present the two key deliverables we were responsible for: the Values and Ethics Handbook and the Inclusion Plan of the project. These resources are critical in ensuring that all project phases prioritise ethics and gender equality. During our time in Cork, we took part in a number of workshops: 🔹 Collaborated on co-analysis tools & methodologies with THINGS 🔹 Delved into stakeholder governance in living labs with Linköping University 🔹 Explored mental health evaluation devices by NeuroLandscape 🔹 Reviewed ICT toolsets & data infrastructure with Sensative 🔹 Investigated local greening methods led by LAND 🔹 Focused on Key Performance Indicators with University College Cork & Multicriteria Group (Mcrit) as well as communication strategies with Ideas for Change! We also engaged in conversations with community organisations like Knocknaheeny Hollyhill Community Garden and Churchfield Community Trust, both of which exemplify how community-driven efforts can support more vulnerable groups and foster social inclusion. Additionally, we had an interview with Ideas for Change, where we explained our role as technical partners and how we support the city of Athens in re-greening and re-naturalizing Profitis Ilias Park in Rizoupoli, focusing on creating an environment that reflects the needs of the entire community. 🍀 Our hosts at University College Cork and the Cork City Council - Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí went above and beyond to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We left Cork inspired by the city’s strong sense of community, where support, inclusivity, and care are at the heart of the city’s policy. 🔸 Our key takeaway from our trip in Cork was the strong sense of community in the city, and how the city itself takes care of its citizens and values their needs. This made us think that having community-driven cities is actually possible, if there is the required support from the respective City Councils. #UrbanPlanning #GreenCities #UrbanSustainability #InclusiveCommunities #SustainableDevelopment #ReGreeningCities #CommunityEngagement

Bridging the Gaps: Integrating Green Spaces in Urban Planning with GreenInCities project As LAND Research Lab Project Director, I'm really Happy to share our scientific and professional commitment in the international re-greening call to action! As cities expand, the need for green spaces becomes more crucial than ever. However, planning for nature development and conservation often faces significant gaps that hinder sustainable urban development. In the GreeInCities workshop lead by LAND, we were able to set a methodology to Identifying the Planning Gaps for Re-greening cities 🌱: 🌍 Lack of Integrated Planning across scale and time: Many urban development projects overlook the importance of green infrastructure, leading to lost opportunities for biodiversity and community well-being. ☘️Insufficient Funding and resources: Green initiatives often compete with other pressing urban needs for funding, leaving vital projects under-resourced and behind more fruitful investments. 🐝Limited Community Engagement: Effective conservation requires input from local communities, yet their voices are often missing from the planning process. 🌳Tunneling the Importance of Green Spaces in operational design process: Integrating nature into urban environments not only enhances aesthetics but also improves air quality, reduces urban heat, and fosters mental well-being. 💪 Moving Forward: Collaborative Approaches: Encourage partnerships among urban planners, landscape architects, environmentalists, engineers and community members. NBS Policy Advocacy: Push for NBS policies that prioritize green infrastructure and NBS in all developments stages: from concept design to site-specific management Let’s work together to ensure our cities are not just concrete jungles but thriving ecosystems that support both people and nature. Let's thinking global while acting local 💡 Follow us in our Re-Naturing Cities journey #UrbanPlanning #GreenCities #NatureConservation #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityEngagement Andreas Kipar Nikolas Neubert Luisa Bellini Andrea Balestrini Valentina Galiulo Caterina Vetrugno Giulia Castellazzi Giovanni Pagano
