Lesson #1 - Nothing is Magic Web analytics is a funny thing. Often, setting up tracking can be done in many different ways. At Green Line Digital, we often end up needing to use Google Tag Manager on clients' websites to set up basic web analytics with GA4 along with paid media tracking. The thing is, this process isn't always really straightforward. GTM is great at picking up user events, but sometimes the data isn't there the way you expect it to be. Other times, the data isn't there at all. And that's where "nothing is magic" really became a reality for me. When events are firing, when they aren't firing, or when websites are acting in unexpected ways, there is ALWAYS a reason. It could be that the event just doesn't exist. It could be that the data layer (Google's custom setup for allowing GA4 and GTM to "see" events) isn't set up properly. It could be that you're trying to track an event that's happening behind an iframe (hey thanks Hubspot). Either way -- in the web analytics world, nothing is magic. When things happen or when they don't is because someone, somewhere wrote a piece of code a certain way. And in digital marketing, it's often our job to be web analytics sleuths, dig in to some code (that we didn't write!), and figure out why.
