❗️N.C. State Zero Waste Football Update❗️
The Zero Waste Wolfpack is a partnership between WRR, NC State Athletics, WSP, and GFL. It's a program that had groundwork laid in 2015 and it's run by interns and volunteers. This season, I've been given the opportunity to lead the charge.
We were just featured last Friday by WRAL in this news article: https://lnkd.in/e2jAa99R
This past weekend was the Sustainable Wolfpack Football game, and the Zero Waste Wolfpack hosted a Post-Game Sunday Sort in honor of Green Sports Day on 10/6. Over the weekend, we diverted 4,110 lbs of compost and 274 lbs of plastic film. To put these numbers in perspective, that's about how much was diverted during the entire duration of last season.
On game day, with the help of our partners at Aramark, our volunteers, and the student group Grand Challenges Scholars, we diverted 2,380 lbs of compost. On Green Sports Day, with the help of Sustainability Stewards, Zero Waste Wolves, and other community volunteers, we diverted 1,730 lbs of compost. It was the biggest sort I’ve been apart of and it was extremely rewarding helping to make it happen.🥰

So far this season, our total stadium game day compost diversion is 8,739 lbs Our goal is to compost 13,000 lbs. All the compost collected goes straight to our very own on campus compost facility to be processed into nutrient rich soil amendments. North Carolina State University is fortunate enough to have a full-loop composting campus which means that soil is used in landscaping, for research, and at the acroecology farm where it helps grow produce for Dining!
We are so lucky to also have a partnership with The Great Raleigh Cleanup in the tailgate lots this season! They’ve diverted over 440 lbs of aluminum which goes back into their program to beautify our community and employee homeless.
We are always looking for faculty/staff, student, and/or community volunteers to help us continue making a big impact. We need volunteers for our remaining games on Oct 12th, Nov 2nd, and Nov 9th. If there's enough interest, we may also host another post-game event on Nov 10th.
GO PACK!❤️🐺🏈♻️🪱🌱
