Exciting news for advanced prostate cancer patients! A new drug combination, proven in the PROpel study led by The Christie's Professor Noel Clarke, will now be more accessible on the NHS. This treatment pairs abiraterone with olaparib, extending life expectancy by 7.4 months for those where other treatments have failed. A monumental leap in prostate cancer care! #ProstateCancer #CancerResearch #InTheNews #cancer
A new combination of drugs for patients with advanced prostate cancer will now be made more widely available on the NHS thanks to a trial jointly led by researchers at The Christie. The PROpel study was designed and co-led by Professor Noel Clarke, one of our consultant urologists. It examines the effect of combining a testosterone blocker (abiraterone) with a targeted cancer drug that stops damaged cancer cells from repairing themselves (olaparib). The results showed that this combination increased the life expectancy of patients for whom previous treatments had stopped working by an average of 7.4 months compared to standard therapy using abiraterone alone. This is the largest improvement in survival ever reported for prostate cancer at this stage. The treatment has now been approved by The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), Professor Clarke has worked at The Christie since 1993 and is the head of the GU Cancer Research Group. He has also been the co-principal investigator for the STAMPEDE trial since its inception in 2005, The study was the first ever to develop a new way of conducting medical trials, including those in cancer. One of its components originally proved the effectiveness of abiraterone as a novel hormone therapy for treating men with advanced prostate cancer. #ProstateCancer #CancerResearch #TheChristie #InTheNews
