The seven ACCEL Year 2 startups are working on everything from yeast-centered water treatment, to vertical-axis offshore wind turbines, to algae- and cellulose-based fashion beads. And in the first half of the program, they’ve been hard at work on tech and business development. Check out some highlights of progress the startups have made through their training with VentureWell and membership at Greentown: 💧 AtmoSpark Technologies Inc. conducted a pilot under a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense and has secured another paid pilot that involves scaling its tech 10x over the upcoming year. 🚰 Aquasaic has a water-treatment pilot lined up with the city of Antioch, CA. 🌬️ Axis Sky Renewables has begun fundraising and developed plans to build out its team and create a proof-of-concept. 🌎 Carbon Negative Solutions Inc was selected for three different accelerator programs, won multiple awards and pitch competitions, and was featured in a concrete-industry podcast and a TEDx Talk. 📿 Cellsense has been hard at work in Greentown Boston's wet lab and won a What Design Can Do Redesign Everything Challenge and won a $25k prize from the JFK Foundation. 🏗️ EcoForge has been leveraging prototyping and wet lab space at Greentown and meeting with corporates including our partner BASF. 🍃 Sankofa Dynamics is securing its IP, building its team, identifying pilot partners, and finding local sources of post-consumer-waste feed materials. Most battery innovations focus on the electrode materials—like silicon anodes, cobalt-free cathodes, or manganese-rich cathodes. But Elementium Materials, Inc. is taking a different approach: introducing a novel electrolyte that builds higher-energy-density, faster-charging, lower-cost, and longer-lasting batteries. “The key to unlocking next-generation batteries is in the electrolyte,” says CEO Matt Dawson. “Our technology creates an incredibly stable battery that translates into very long calendar life, very long cycle life, higher voltage, and higher energy density. This could reshape the energy transition as we know it.” Elementium Materials is not only improving the performance of batteries, but lowering their cost: by stretching batteries’ expensive electrode materials further, the innovation allows batteries to do more with less material. Its electrolytes are nonflammable and the electrolyte materials are recyclable. Proud of our member Upstream Tech for stepping in to provide access to the satellite and aerial images of the Southeast's landscape after #HurricaneHelene. Upstream Tech makes Lens, a remote monitoring and reporting platform that expands access to a vast library of geospatial data and remote imagery—critical components of #disasterresponse and recovery efforts as officials and advocates assess the damage and plan recovery efforts. Hurricane Helene is a devastating reminder of the urgency of the climate crisis. With extreme weather events growing in frequency and severity, decimating communities in their wake, we see with clear eyes the challenge in front of us—and our community is rolling up our sleeves to meet the mandate. We're so grateful and proud to support the entrepreneurs that are thinking outside of the box and committing to new ways to decarbonize how we build, move, eat, power, create, and more—and to our entire ecosystem of climate champions who help get these solutions out of the lab and into the world every day.
We, like many of you, are watching reports from the Southeast U.S. with deep concern for the communities affected by Hurricane Helene. We are now beginning to see the first satellite and aerial images coming online in Lens that can help us to understand the new landscape left behind by this storm. This month, we will provide free access to Lens for local partners to support rescue and recovery efforts. More information here: https://hubs.la/Q02RSt4t0

FUNDING NEWS: more capital for #geothermal! Congratulations to our member Dandelion Energy, which just raised a $40M Series C for the national rollout of its geothermal systems that heat and cool single-family homes and multifamily housing. 🏡 Founded by Kathy Hannun, Dandelion Energy is focused on addressing the biggest obstacles preventing geothermal heat pumps from scaling: they can be costly upfront (despite saving homeowners money in the long-term), their installation process requires coordinating many different stakeholders, and not many homeowners are aware geothermal heating is an option for them. The company achieves this through a combination of financing, all-in-one design and installation, and connecting customers with government tax incentives from the #IRA that can bring the cost as low as $0. We're so proud of how far Dandelion has come since joining Greentown in May 2021 to built out its hardware team in our prototyping lab. “Having the shared prototyping resources has been really great for us,” said Hannun. “It allowed us to start our small but mighty hardware engineering team really quickly. We staffed it and we didn’t have to worry about leasing industrial space, getting WiFi hooked up, figuring out how we’re going to do prototyping etc. Having a built-in community that already knows what startups doing hardware innovation need made it very easy to get started.” https://lnkd.in/gaZEp3rA
