Currently, nearly half of American households and businesses are unable to use rooftop solar systems due to high costs of installation or because they live in buildings that cannot host solar panels. U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján recently introduced the Community Solar Consumer Choice Act, legislation that would support community solar projects and expand access to solar energy across the country, regardless of one’s income or ability to host a solar system on their roof. Directing more resources to expand renewable energy through community solar projects would lower energy costs for consumers, support good-paying green energy jobs, and help combat the climate crisis. “As the climate crisis continues to worsen, it’s clear that we must do more to support clean energy projects like community solar,” said Senator Luján. “I’m proud to introduce the Community Solar Consumer Choice Act to expand access to solar power through community solar projects for all Americans and create more good-paying, clean energy jobs." A huge feilcidades to this amazing team who finished installing a 6.6kW grid-tied solar system at the Centro Scalabrini de Formación para Migrantes (CESFOM) in Tijuana, Mexico. The GRID Alternatives Mexico team, together with the local solar company Electro Ambiental and 5 people who CESFOM supports, installed the project last week. Thank you to Flex Foundation for supporting this project. With two women engineers on the roof, one woman shared with us that because there was another women on the roof with her, the crew followed her instructions without being questioned. She shared that it was new for her to have her instructions and judgement calls to the rest of the crew taken seriously which is often not the case for women in technical roles.

GRID Alternatives is proudly celebrating our 20th year of building community-powered solutions to advance economic and environmental justice through renewable energy, and our work is made possible with partners like KPMG US Foundation! Over the past twenty years, GRID Alternatives has successfully implemented over 95 megawatts of solar projects for more than 32,000 income-qualified families across the nation. This means we have provided underserved families an estimated total lifetime energy cost savings of $732 million since 2004. Additionally, GRID's workforce development has provided hands-on job training in clean energy technologies to over 33,850 individuals, with the aim to build diversity and inclusion in the industry. Today, GRID is a leading voice in low-income solar policy and the nation’s largest nonprofit solar installer. Our impact extends beyond borders, reaching families across the nation as well as communities across Nepal, Nicaragua, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The KPMG US Foundation seeks to create a world with equity and access to opportunity for all through committing funding to support programs that will help underrepresented groups confront systemic barriers – and together, we have expanded access to the benefits of our clean energy economy for families across the nation and for people experiencing higher barriers to employment. The KPMG US Foundation has supported GRID Alternatives’ solar and workforce development programs since 2016, and pledged over $300K in funding to support our programmatic work. Since 2023, GRID has collaborated with KPMG’s Data Citizens with Purpose Program on pro bono initiatives, leveraging their expertise to help analyze our data and generate valuable insights to enhance our impact. In addition, KPMG staff have participated in 15 Corporate Workday events in California and Colorado since the beginning of our partnership, creating hands-on impact by engaging in solar installations alongside GRID staff. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, we want to give a special shout-out to our partnership with KPMG US Foundation for empowering GRID’s positive impacts. Our vision of an equitable transition to clean energy that includes everyone is made possible by the continued support and collaboration with our partners and communities. We extend heartfelt gratitude to KPMG US Foundation, and look forward to the future of our impactful partnership!

After nearly 13 years in Chico, GRID Alternatives North Valley regional office shifted all operations to the new Sacramento location this year. As a way to commemorate the move and celebrate the tremendous growth in impact they have had serving communities from San Joaquin County west to the Oregon border and east to the Nevada border, they recently hosted an open house to bring the community together and toast to the work ahead. In attendance were many community-based partners, new and old funders alike, and even some past clients. Attendees enjoyed delicious tacos from a local food truck, California Street Taco and engaged in fun activities like “Pin the Panel on the Roof." GRID North Valley staff also led guests through a tour of the new facility, which was decorated with fresh flowers from Outreach Co-Manager Summer LeBard’s home garden, adding colorful pops to the festive GRID signage. North Valley’s Co-Executive Directors, Achini Bandara and Pablo Del’Aguila, shared that in 13 years, GRID North Valley has installed over 10 megawatts of solar, generating $70m in lifetime savings for our clients, preventing over 150K tons in carbon emissions, and graduating over 300 trainees from our solar job training programs.
