This is a common sentiment shared by many, highlighting the growing challenge of affordable housing. As the cost of living and housing continues to rise, it's crucial that we build a variety of housing options that cater to the diverse needs of our residents. From starter homes for first-time buyers to affordable options for growing families, we need housing that accommodates all stages of life.

With over 15 years of experience in city planning, City of Fayetteville, Arkansas Development Services Director Jonathan Curth navigates the many complexities that shape Fayetteville’s development. He’s currently focused on two exciting projects: launching a permit-ready building program and initiating a new downtown plan. One of his main goals for the next 20 years is "for each community to offer a diversity of housing options that gives new and existing residents the flexibility to live and work nearly anywhere in the metro." Housing and transportation costs are inextricably linked, and in NWA, these costs take up 42 - 45% of household incomes, placing a heavy burden on residents. As we continue to grow, it’s important to shift our focus toward building housing in ways that reduce these burdens. By prioritizing housing near job centers and major transit corridors, we can offer residents access to jobs and services without long, expensive commutes. This also opens the door for more efficient transit systems, which is critical as our region continues to expand. We have an opportunity to design neighborhoods that are connected, efficient, and economically accessible.

Exciting news from the National Housing Crisis Task Force! The first 6 tools of State and Local Housing Action Plan have been released. This plan marks a crucial step forward in empowering state and local governments to transform housing ecosystems nationwide. We encourage communities to explore these tools and share your insights as we work together to build a more equitable housing landscape.
State & local governments have more power than they realize to transform housing ecosystems. As a member of the National Housing Crisis Task Force, I’m excited to share the release of the first 6 tools in the State and Local Housing Action Plan. States and localities are ripe for innovation and are well positioned to tear down and adapt the systems that are at the root of many of today's housing challenges. The Housing Action Plan serves as a guide for communities to implement the tools now and a roadmap to identify how these innovations can be scaled more rapidly in more places to create more attainable housing. As we continue to update and add to the tools in the coming months, we encourage communities to start working toward implementing some or all of these innovative practices and share your questions and feedback with us. It’s a common misconception that density causes traffic. In reality, sprawl is what clogs our roads. Low-density development spreads people out, forcing them to rely on long commutes, which leads to increased traffic congestion and environmental strain. The solution lies in smart growth—focusing on building communities with density near job centers, transit routes, and essential services. This approach not only reduces traffic but also supports a more sustainable, efficient urban environment.
