Can we increase crop yield by targeting photosynthesis? By improving the fundamental process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy, it seems as though we could hypothetically greatly improve crop productivity. The cultivated strawberry has a unique domestication history that spans approximately 300 years. However, in just the last 60 years, the annual production of strawberry has increased by 8.4 million tonnes worldwide. Maize is simultaneously one of the world's most important food crops and one of the most susceptible crops to heat stress, making it a critical target for improved resilience. This review summarizes recent advances in the understanding the molecular regulations underlying high temperature sensing and response, the transcriptional regulation of heat shock factors during heat stress response, and the epigenetic factors involved in heat stress response and memory.
