At GUE, we’re proud to highlight the incredible women in diving who continue to push boundaries. One of them is GUE Instructor Lauren Wilson, who recently took part in an inspiring polar diving program with the Finnish Scientific Diving Academy. Here's her story of growth, resilience, and learning in one of the toughest environments on Earth. "On #InternationalWomensDay, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a polar diving operations program with the Finnish Scientific Diving Academy surrounded by a talented and coincidentally primarily female class. The course challenged each of us to navigate extreme surface conditions, snowmobile use, and plan under-ice science-focused dives, all while pushing us to grow both technically and mentally in our respective fields and passions for the underwater world. This experience served as a powerful reminder that the resilience and adaptability women demonstrate in everyday life are just as essential when facing some of the more challenging environments on Earth. So here’s to pushing boundaries, acquiring new skills, and continuing to learn from each other and the world around us. 🥂" Thank you, Lauren, for sharing your incredible journey with us! In November, we welcomed Paige Strudwick to the GUE family as part of the NextGen Legacy Project. Paige took the Fundamentals course in the beautiful Riviera Maya, Mexico, with her spot kindly covered by Annika Persson. Thank you, Annika! 🙏 Paige embraced diving in a new configuration with doubles, long hose, and primary light, quickly mastering new skills and refining techniques to hover more efficiently. We’re excited for Paige's and our Trainees' future in diving. Big thanks to Zero Gravity for providing great logistics! Looking forward to seeing Paige continue her journey with GUE alongside other trainees and our NextGen Scholar Tan. #NextGenLegacy #GUEFundamentals #WomenInDiving #GUE #UnderwaterExploration #DivingAdventures #RivieraMaya #DivingLife #CaveDiving #DiveGUE

The Tirpitz, the sister ship of the Bismarck, was one of the most feared warships of WWII. Known as the "Lonely Queen of the North," it disrupted Allied operations, survived multiple bombing attempts, and met a dramatic end. Thrilled and honored to share with you that my research has been recently selected for funding by both the French national PPR Ocean-Climat call (a CNRS priority research program) and the European Marie-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (HORIZON MSCA). Grateful for this incredible support! My work focuses on characterizing phytoplankton interactions in situ in the context of climate change, while exploring nature-based solutions to mitigate its effects. These interactions include those between microorganisms themselves, and with benthic organisms—the so-called Marine Animal Forests (MAFs) such as corals, gorgonians, and sponges. 2024 has been an incredible year of research and fieldwork across the Mediterranean and tropical New Caledonia. My varied research projects included: 🔹 Seagoing campaigns and scientific diving to sample seawater, phytoplankton, corals, sponges, gorgonians and mussels 🔹 eDNA sampling and analysis 🔹 Laboratory work and microscopy 🔹 In vitro and in situ microfluidics Beyond research, 2024 was also a year of public engagement and scientific outreach - from participating in the French Fête de la Science to a science-art intervention. Additionally, I am proud to have secured support from #GUE (Global Underwater Explorers) and #HALCYON, world leaders in the diving industry. Having been deceived more than once by the numerous 'green-washing' projects proliferating today, I find it so deeply gratifying to collaborate with top-tier and official scientific institutions: #IRD – Research Institute for Development #MIO – Mediterranean Institute of Oceanography #ENTROPIE – Tropical Marine Ecology of the Pacific & Indian Oceans Need a scientist, a diver, or both? Need consulting? Need to communicate results? Want to talk science or policy? Feel free to reach out!

Speaking about my Global Underwater Explorers NextGen Traineeship at the BOOT as part of Jenn Thomson's talk. The GUE NextGen Legacy Project empowers young divers by providing training, mentoring, and an introduction into the GUE community. My own journey as a Trainee includes a Fundies in Ticino 🌊, a Documentation Diver in Spain 📸 and coming June a Tech1 in Italy ⚙️ plus a wreck docu project 🚢 I studied, learned, practiced, improved, and enjoyed. Thank you GUE for these opportunities and thank you Ivan Wagner, Ricardo Constantino and Bartek Trzcinski for training me for free! #guediver #globalunderwaterexplorers #guenextgenlegacyproject

I recently finished my year as the Global Underwater Explorers NextGen Scholar for 2023/24. As well as supporting equipment and training in diving, the scholarship connected me with leading underwater explorers and conservationists across the globe. Divers have a unique role to play in conservation efforts, given their direct interaction with the underwater environment. Through education, advocacy, and responsible diving practices, I am looking forward to applying what I learned last year to make a positive impact on the marine ecosystems I love. Thanks to all those who supported me along the way. If you'd like to learn more about the year, you can watch my recap video here: https://lnkd.in/eTkN9kDy You can also read my Article from InDepth magazine: https://lnkd.in/eJcSsget There's another article from Quest that can be viewed here (GUE members only): https://lnkd.in/ecAwXtuD
