About us
The Guide Dog Foundation empowers individuals who are blind, visually impaired, or have disabilities by providing free guide dogs since 1946. We welcome students from across the US and around the world, offering personalized instruction to accommodate diverse needs. Our operations rely solely on generous donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations—without government funding. As pioneers, we earned certification in 2009 from both the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International. This accreditation signifies our commitment to the highest standards of dog care, education for trainers, and a consumer-friendly application process with grievance protocols.

“I am looking forward to getting to know Hankie more and becoming more independent.” - Craig, GDF graduate. One of the most special moments in our two-week program is sitting down with our students to hear their favorite memories and hopes for the future with their new guide dogs. Meet Sheila, one of our Puppy Advisors in the Puppy Department! 🦮🐕🦺 Sheila has been with the Guide Dog Foundation and America's VetDogs for over two years, and her passion for her work is inspiring. With many years of experience training dogs and their people, Sheila loves helping puppy raisers understand how dogs learn. From teaching essential skills to organizing engaging Zoom classes and finding unique socialization opportunities, she is dedicated to preparing the next generation of service dogs. When she’s not working with our future guide and service dogs, Sheila is hanging out with her own furry family: Gal, her Great Dane rescue; George, a black lab; and Gertie, a Bull Terrier rescued from South Korea. And we can’t forget her cat Trevor! 🐾 We’re lucky to have Sheila on our team. The graphic reads “Employee Spotlight. Sheila D. Puppy Advisor.” A smaller photo of Sheila smiling while crouching next to a yellow lab is featured with the graphic. #guidedogfoundation #americasvetdogs #assistancedog #employeespotlight #nonprofitorganization

Today is National White Cane Awareness Day. 🦯 At the Guide Dog Foundation, we honor the white cane as a symbol of independence for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Like guide dogs, white canes represent freedom and mobility while also serving as a visible indication to sighted individuals that the person using the cane is blind or has low vision. Did you know? In 1930, George A. Bonham, president of the Peoria Lions Club in Illinois, noticed that motorists couldn’t see a man using a black cane. He suggested painting the cane white with a red stripe to improve visibility, and the idea quickly spread across the country. Join us in celebrating this symbol of independence. 🤍 The image shows Hattie, a black lab guide dog, lying under her handler’s chair. In front of her is her handlers folded up white cane. #guidedog #guidedogfoundation #whitecane #blind #lowvision
