Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) encompasses all of the ways that someone communicates besides talking. It allows individuals with disabilities to express their needs, wants, and ideas. People of all ages can use AAC if they have trouble with speech or language skills. Tools range from simple picture boards to sophisticated speech-generating systems with touch screens and voice output. They can be highly customized, helping to address the unique communication needs and preferences of each user. Beyond functional communication, AAC systems often enable users to express their personality and preferences. Customizable voices, images, and layouts can reflect individual interests and identities, making communication more personal and authentic. Depending on the complexity of the AAC device/system, it can take several hours to a few weeks of training for a communication partner to become proficient in supporting a non-verbal individual. Familiarity with the device's layout, features, and vocabulary is essential. #aacawarenessmonth #aacslp #aacawareness https://lnkd.in/eWrGJvgG

October is #DownSyndromeAwarenessMonth, a time to acknowledge and celebrate the Down Syndrome community around the world. The National Down Syndrome Society estimates 5,000 babies are born with the condition each year, which is caused by an extra chromosome in the 21st pair. Individuals with Down Syndrome have an increased risk of co-occurring diagnoses, including heart disease, Alzheimer's, and immune disorders. Creating a care team early on is one way to ensure a happy and healthy life and work towards independence. The Guild builds teams of support professionals for all youth and adults in our programs, including speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, behavior clinicians, teaching staff, and residential care. Join us for an educational film screening and discussion! 🎬 We are inviting The Guild community to view "In A Different Key – The Story of Autism” on Monday, October 7, from 5-7pm at the Maynard Fine Arts Theatre. This spring several Guild team members had the opportunity to view the trailer for this movie and meet the Director at a conference. This sparked our interest, leading us to explore this incredible story – and now we can’t wait to share it with you! Registration is required as space is limited: https://lnkd.in/eSuNMgQD

Communication is an essential part of social interaction and healthy relationships. Guild students and residents receive both structured and unstructured social skills training. This allows individuals to express themselves, communicate their needs, participate in their communities, and have rich social interactions. Guild Trustee Sue Connors hosted her second annual wine tasting and fundraiser for The Guild last week. The theme was communication, specifically how non-speaking individuals like Sue's son can communicate using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and helped us raise more than $9,000 to support The Guild's speech and language therapy programs!

Children reach milestones at different times, especially those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A new study aims to identify how children with Down Syndrome develop and when parents can expect them to reach different milestones, like using expanded vocabulary, running, using stairs, and walking independently. https://lnkd.in/eqvuTtVh

Their dedication and compassion make a difference in the lives of our students and residents every day. Join us in thanking all our care staff for DSP Recognition Week! #dsprw2024 #disabilitysupport #directsupportprofessional
