In 2023, most of the top U.S. ports saw a drop in container volumes compared to 2022. However, the value of goods at these ports often rose or stayed steady, indicating a shift in the types of goods being imported. Only a few ports managed to grow their TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit) volumes during this period. Descartes has released its 2024 Trade Report & Analysis of U.S. maritime ports, and we're taking a look at the ten ports with the highest volume of imports in 2023. Performance Breakdown of Top 10 Ports 1. Los Angeles, CA Despite a drop in volume, the value of goods rose, primarily due to higher-value imports like electronics. 2. New York-New Jersey This port remained the second busiest, but saw a significant drop in volume, with a slight decrease in the value of imports. 3. Long Beach, CA Long Beach saw a late surge in 2023, but it wasn’t enough to offset the overall decline in both volume and value. 4. Savannah, GA Savannah’s volumes declined, affected by lower water levels in the Panama Canal, but the value of goods remained nearly steady. 5. Houston, TX Houston’s volumes dipped slightly, but the value of imports edged up, buoyed by specific high-value goods like solar panels. 6. Norfolk, VA Norfolk experienced a significant drop in both volume and value, with the latter affected more sharply. 7. Charleston, SC Charleston saw declines in both volume and value, with high-value imports such as auto parts and furniture dropping significantly. 8. Oakland, CA Oakland’s trade volume dropped notably, but the value of goods saw a less dramatic decline. 9. Tacoma, WA* Tacoma was the only West Coast port to see a rise in TEU volumes, with a significant increase in the value of goods (*Answer to the Question of the Day). 10. Miami, FL Miami’s volumes slightly decreased, with a minimal decline in the value of its imports. *** All information above was provided by Freight Caviar News *** #GulfCoastLogistics #FreightMovement #FreightBroker

The FHWA attributes 23% of all roadway delays to inclement weather, which is expected to become more frequent due to climate change. It is more important than ever to minimize disruptions from significant weather systems like hurricanes, which can lead to extreme ripple effects throughout the entire supply chain.  Here are a few tips to stay prepared: 1. Get secure It’s time to create a structured framework that’s ready to spring into action when a storm is kissing the coast. To accommodate a diverse range of potential disasters, this will include practicing how to handle multiple scenarios, cross-functional planning and being able to address the most important decisions that can arise and how they’ll be met. Some of these decisions could include: - How to address each customer after the fact - How to make up lost earnings and revenue - Should you source internationally? 2. Choose your back-up The question isn’t if a storm will hit- it’s when. Keeping this in mind, you’ll need to be prepared to relocate loads and equipment before a storm makes landfall. Study routes, ports, warehouses and factories to get an idea of where you can quickly make a transfer to areas where your supply chain won’t be affected and disrupted. 3. Watch the weather Never underestimate the weather or think “it won’t happen to me.” If your supply chain incorporates a region that experiences hurricanes, then it’s imperative to make time to follow weather patterns. Watch areas that have a higher risk of flooding or how close major highways come to the coast. Remember that when a storm is approaching, evacuation is possible and can cause traffic jams. Gasoline becomes a hot commodity and long lines at gas stations can lead to stress. Prepare by stocking up and knowing alternative routes to take in case a storm is on the way.
