What a great way to wrap up the Blue Economy Summer Series with Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, where we explored innovative uses for microalgae and discussed the launch of their Maine Algal Research Infrastructure and Accelerator.
Last month at our lab we co-hosted “Driving Biotech Innovation with Microalgae” with Gulf of Maine Research Institute. It was an opportunity for researchers, blue economy leaders, and the interested public to rub elbows and share ideas. Beth Orcutt, our VP for research, Mike Lomas, director of Bigelow Laboratory’s Center for Algal Innovations, and Blaine Grimes, Chief Ventures Officer at GMRI, each presented new and innovative ideas on how algae can be used in different markets — from pharmaceuticals to biomaterials. It was a fun, productive, and wide-ranging conversation about new areas to explore with algae. The group also discussed the best ways to engage with blue economy thought leaders both in Maine and beyond. And with the launch of the Maine Algal Research Infrastructure and Accelerator in concert with our partners across the state, this conversation is just getting started!
