Last weekend, a volunteer team for the Neponset River Watershed Association (NepRWA), including GZA staffers Heather Audet, Marty Rodick, Melissa Kenerson, Sarah Napadensky, Bill Lovejoy, and Dan Seitz took out a thicket of buckthorn. Common buckthorn was first introduced to the US from Europe and Western Asia in the early 1800s, and has since become a persistent invasive species. Working together, the volunteers were able to widen a mown path and help NepRWA test a solution of vinegar to keep the buckthorn down and give native species room to thrive! Thank you to Stacie Miller and Matt Lundsten for the images.
