Through shelter, we empower.
About us
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

As Hurricane Milton approaches landfall in Florida's Tampa Bay area, Habitat for Humanity teams are readying their response and are committed to the years-long recovery effort that will follow. “Families still picking up the pieces from Hurricane Helene last month are now bracing for another potentially deadly storm. Habitat for Humanity’s housing and recovery experts in the path of Hurricane Milton stand ready to begin rapid assessments of the storm’s impact as soon as it is safe to do so. Our prayers are with every person affected by these disasters across the U.S. Southeast, and Habitat is committed to the years-long recovery effort that will follow.” - Adrienne Goolsby, Habitat for Humanity International’s senior vice president, U.S. and Canada https://lnkd.in/eu4ZvBhf

Habitat for Humanity works in roughly 150 communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. While our teams continue to conduct assessments of the housing damage in these areas, we know that the damage is substantial. Like many in western North Carolina, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity's offices and ReStore suffered heavy damage due to flooding. Donate today to support our long-term recovery work: https://lnkd.in/etmeaQsg

Equitable and fair access to affordable homeownership is a springboard for families to build intergenerational wealth and drives better economic, health and educational outcomes. The housing affordability crisis in the U.S., driven largely by a shortage of affordable entry-level housing and rising prices, is disproportionately impacting the most vulnerable groups — households of color and low- to moderate-income households. Learn more about how Habitat is committed to removing barriers to affordable homeownership for the most vulnerable communities across the U.S. https://lnkd.in/ehArdw2h

"There are actually answers to the challenges. We just have to be brave enough to say we are going to do something about it." Tawkiyah Jordan, Vice President, Housing and Community Strategy at Habitat for Humanity International, was first to take the mic tonight in St. Paul as we are hosting the Racial Justice in Housing Symposium as part of the 2024 #CarterWorkProject. Dr. Andre Perry delivered the keynote address before a panel discussion began, exploring the historical struggle for racial justice in housing while also sharing solutions that have demonstrably broken down barriers, offering a path forward toward a more equitable future.
