Building strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter since 1988.

About us

Habitat for Humanity of Berks County is a 501(c)(3) ecumenical Christian charitable organization which exists to create affordable homeownership opportunities with and for low-income families. Families who purchase Habitat for Humanity homes must first contribute 400 hours construction labor on a Habitat home, a contribution we call “sweat-equity.” Homes are sold to the families at no profit, and financed by Habitat for Humanity of Berks County with zero-interest mortgages. The payments made by the families on their mortgages are then used to build more homes in our community. We rely on volunteers and families contributing sweat-equity for the “un-skilled” labor needed to build the homes. Working in this way, we believe we provide families a “hand-up” rather than a “hand-out,” while also providing a way for good people to assist hard-working families in our community.

  • Habitat Berks was proud to be a part of Wednesday's press conference where Mayor Mayor Eddie Moran announced that the City of Reading has submitted its CRIZ Program application to the State Department of Community and Economic Development. The Community Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) Program was established by the state of Pennsylvania in 2013 to generate economic growth in cities, revive communities, and spur job growth. Being accepted into the CRIZ Program would have a tremendous impact on our community, and we are hopeful that the City of Reading will soon receive this designation. • Recently, we gave longtime supporters, Rick Kovach and Amy Kovach, a tour of one of the Miltimore Street homes. This father and daughter team has constructed handmade birdhouses for Habitat’s Annual Birdhouse Challenge for the past seven years. To date, their creative and innovative birdhouses have collectively raised nearly $10,000 at auction! After many years of friendship, we wanted the opportunity to show the Kovachs what their efforts have helped us accomplish. Executive Director, Tim Daley, and Director of Development, Doug Long, led the tour, and we’re proud to report that Rick, owner of Precision Handyman Services LLC, was impressed with the materials and workmanship at the Miltimore Street homes. Many thanks to the Kovach family for their generous donations of time and resources. We deeply appreciate their enduring support!

  • As you may know, our friends at Bethel Hill United Methodist Church have constructed and donated the framing for four of the houses on Miltimore Street. Below is a link to a fantastic video of their most recent project, for houses 7 & 8. They are such a hardworking, generous, and friendly group--it's easy to why they were named our 2024 Community Partner Award Winners! https://lnkd.in/e8iQuTn6

  • We were very excited to partner with one of our neighbors, Trinity Lutheran Church, in their renovation project. The beautiful 233 year old church at 6th & Washington has a richly storied past, including its use as a hospital during the Revolutionary War. While there is much respect for the history of Trinity, some updates are needed to best serve its congregation and the neighborhood. The church is now turning the former auditorium into a large multi-purpose room, which will be frequently utilized by several community groups. Over six days, Habitat staffers and volunteers will be removing the current stage, carpet and damaged flooring. Our demo work will be done at no cost to the church, which will save them about $10,000 in their renovation budget. We are thankful for the trust of Trinity Lutheran Church on this project, and look forward to seeing the final results!

  • Thank you to all who attended last week's State of the Organization Breakfast sponsored by Penske. The main topic of discussion was Habitat Berks' impact Beyond the House, in which our work creates a ripple effect in local and regional economies. In addition, we shared details on our collaboration with Adelle Schade, founder and director of Albright College’s Total Experience Learning Center, in our efforts to revitalize the area connecting the Total Experience Learning Center on Rockland Street to Reading School District’s STEM academy at 9th & Douglass Streets. This project, dubbed "The Innovation Corridor" by Adelle Schade, will provide learning opportunities, safe and affordable housing, and stable communities where families can thrive. Many thanks to the sponsors, supporters and volunteers who make these projects possible! Reading Eagle subscribers can read more here: https://lnkd.in/e_2ERdfq
