Updates

  • You learn things when you prepare to move a house. Like...that you have to remove things that might hang off the side or might not make it under power lines and trees. Recently IDEAL Electrical, Sycamore helped on the Hired Man's House removing the porch and the side overhang of the house. We are so incredibly grateful to have had them on site to help us out! THANK YOU to everyone from Ideal that came out to assist! We look forward to having you on a build site again! #communitypartners #partnerships #Ideal #HFHDC #BuildingHomesBuildingHOPE #HandUP

  • We are so grateful for those that are in our county and our communities that we can partner with to make builds successful. Our 18th build isn't ordinary but it's something special. And we are thrilled to be working alongside Sharp Architects Inc. on this project. Moving a house isn't easy but they are making it easier as they guide us through the process of what needs to be done to move this house to make it a home for Heaven and her son. THANK YOU Lisa F. Sharp and Sharp Architects Inc! We are so grateful for your partnership! #communitypartners #HFHDC #movingahouse #makingahome #BuildingHomesBuildingHOPE #HandUP

  • Happy 100th Birthday, President Carter! President and Rosalyn Carter did not start Habitat for Humanity but they have had a huge part in the reach of Habitat to communities and countries. This week kicked off the 2024 Carter Work Project, a yearly project that works for a week building Habitat homes in a chosen location. This year the Carter Work Project is in St. Paul, MN. https://lnkd.in/g8Q58fji Thank you for all you've done to make Habitat known to the globe and to us, President Carter! #100Years #ThankYou #CarterWorkProject #HFHI #HFHDC #HandUP

  • Habitat for Humanity shares one mission: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity shares one vission: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. Last week our executive director, Kim McIver, was part of a Global Village trip to Mexico. She was chosen as one of seven executive directors to participate in the trip. Kim shared this from her trip: "What I have learned this past week while visiting Habitat Mexico is that we are truly One Habitat trying to spread awareness and support for the critical need for more affordable housing across the globe. I saw firsthand the impact of what the tithe program offers to our neighbors in Mexico. I witnessed the gratitude families have when they are provided with a cement floor instead of a dirt one. I witnessed the independence that both Luciana and her adult handicapped son now have with their own individual rooms instead of sharing one. Through visiting with Habitat Mexico families, it solidified what simple, decent and affordable really means. It solidified that when we share a meal as we did with so many families while there, we really express love for each other. I have scars from carrying buckets of cement, pictures to share the adventures I had and my journal I wrote in for anyone who would like to hear more. The Global Village program is a wonderful program that allows me as an individual to grow my passion more to serve my DeKalb County neighbors. Together we have the ability to give everyone a stable foundation to call home. Together we are stronger." #OneMission #OneHabitat #Global #HFHDC #Together

  • Habitat for Humanity is not just local, statewide, or national. It's global. And no matter what the project, or where, the mission is the same. Today, Kim McIver is on her way to her second Global experience. Her first, pictured here, was several years ago as she was becoming a young adult. Today she's going as one of seven executive directors who were chosen to attend. We are excited to have Kim represent not only our affiliate but also Habitat for Humanity in Illinois. Help us wish her safe travels! We can't wait to share her experience with you.

  • Volunteers are so important to our organization and one volunteer was recently recognized as the 94.9 WDKB Hometown Hero - our own Vice President, Board of Directors, Sheri Kosmos! Thanks to Kim for nominating Sheri: “When you ask for a Hometown Hero, you are looking for someone that is committed to making their community stronger. Someone who believes in helping their neighbors not only live, but thrive. As the Vice President of the Board, and committed volunteer, Sheri has taken ownership of the Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County Home Preservation Program. It is through her passion and incredible excel spreadsheet ability that the Home Preservation Program has flourished. Sheri has changed the trajectory of several homeowners within DeKalb County ensuring that they continue to live in a safe, stable and affordable home for years to come.“ We are SO grateful for the work that Sheri has done since coming on the board in 2019. Sheri's been an invaluable contributor not only to our board work, the work of our affiliate, but the work of our communities which we serve. THANK YOU SHERI...for all you do! We appreciate you so much! #HometownHero #volunteers #BuildingHomesBuildingHOPE #HandUP #HFHDC

  • Some people dream to live in a world where they can have their own house to call HOME. Some people live in a world where they can provide that dream! Kim McIver, Executive Director for Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County does just that. And not just in DeKalb County but in Illinois! In July, Kim became a board member for Habitat for Humanity of Illinois where others from around the state work closely together to live the mission, enact the vision, and protect the principles of the Habitat organization. We are so grateful that Kim sits on that board and brings our voice to the table in Illinois! Congratulations, Kim and thank you for representing so many people in need of adequate and affordable housing in Illinois! • Mission Statement: Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Every nonprofit in DeKalb County works together to help those that need the help the most. We are a village! We are so grateful to be part of that village of nonprofits that work so hard to help those who need it most. We believe that helping those not only helps our economies but helps our hearts and makes our towns/communities a much better place to work, live, grow, and prosper. Thank you to our village of nonprofits for helping us to grow in so many ways that once we never thought was possible! You are all helping us to help another family reach their dream of homeownership! #grateful #community #partnerships #growth #HFHDC #HandUP

  • We are so incredibly blessed to be part of such great communities within DeKalb County. Last night we did a ribbon tying at the Hired Man's House, part of the DeKalb County History Center campus. It culminated us tying together two nonprofits, two communities together for one common cause...creating an affordable, safe home for Heaven and her son. This house will be moving from Sycamore to DeKalb soon, thanks to the collaborative efforts between DeKalb County History Center and our affiliate. So many people to thank for assisting: Michelle from DeKalb County History Center, Board Members Bob Hoffman and Cortney Strohaker, DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Sycamore Chamber of Commerce members, Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb County Board Members, and this wonderful vision which Executive Director Kim McIver had about a year ago. And we are so grateful for other nonprofit friends that attended and support us as we work together to grow each other in helping those in our communities. We have a lot of work to do before Heaven and her son can move into their home. And your support is needed to help us with this project. You can give by clicking the link below and help us raise the funds to raise this house to move! Your donation will go directly to this project. https://bit.ly/4fP1458 #movingahouse #housetohome #HFHDC #BuildingHomesBuildingHOPE #HandUP #bestdaypart1
