Conservation engineers Sam Rogers and Edwin Towler of Tandem Studios collaborated with the charity Whale Wise in Iceland to advance whale conservation using sensor-augmented drones. Their ‘WHASER’ system addresses the challenge of accurately measuring humpback whales, revealing the long-term effects of fishing gear entanglements. By redesigning cumbersome equipment, the team created a smaller, more reliable, and field-ready system. This innovation improves usability, protects sensitive components, and integrates key electronics with enhanced functionality. Supported by Mouser Electronics, MPB, and Accu Components, the project streamlined essential research gear and extended drone flight times. The final design, compatible with any drone, provides a cost-effective and sustainable solution for Whale Wise and cetacean researchers worldwide. This new tool empowers researchers to focus on critical conservation efforts for researchers worldwide, equipping them with tools to better protect these awe-inspiring marine giants. We're bringing our community back together next weekend with another epic conference! Hackaday Europe Berlin is returning to MotionLab in Berlin, Germany March 15th & 16th. We're super excited about this year's badge, a showpiece of super add-ons (SAOs). For Supercon8, we exposed the I2C busses and GPIOs, flashed Micropython, and let attendees get creative. For the Hackaday Europe event, the badge has re-vamped firmware and we've added a range of SAOs that will let your innovation go wild! Tickets are almost sold out so be sure to register soon if you are interested in joining us. https://lnkd.in/gvqGGFzA Check out some of our incredible speakers here → https://lnkd.in/gunEiJES A huge shout out and thank you to our partners Crowd Supply, Seeed Studio, Elecrow, Wurth Elektronik, and Supplyframe for making this event possible.

  • While you're working on your Hackaday Europe proposal, consider submitting your talk to Teardown 2025 as well, another incredible gathering for the open source hardware community.

    View profile for Helen Leigh

Hardware hacker, book author, music maker. Head of Community at Crowd Supply, the crowdfunding platform for open hardware. I run the conference Teardown + started Hardware Happy Hour meetups in London, Berlin & Portland.

Round one of Teardown 2025's call for proposals officially ends today. However, I won't start going through the submissions until Monday, so you have a couple extra days to get your ideas for talks, workshops, demos or installations in. CFP here: https://lnkd.in/dkwtF6nJ Pics below from Teardown 2024, featuring installations from Debra Ansell and Ayesha Wilson, along with a talk on free formed space circuits by Mohit Bhoite and a KiCad + puppets workshop by Chipperdoodles.
