On August 8, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center (CPC) released a mid-season Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook update. In this update, NOAA forecasters increased their initial prediction of an 85 percent chance of an above-normal hurricane season to a 90 percent chance. As the peak of hurricane season quickly approaches, NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) encourages everyone to understand their risks and prepare for potential the threats, including strong winds, storm surge, and flooding. So far in 2024, 29,547 wildfires have burned 5,224,060 acres in the United States (US). This is about one million acres above the 10-year average number of acres burned, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).
