About us

Cultural Skills are essential skills. When you lack them, interacting with people from other cultures can feel like an exercise in frustration and futility. Miscommunications lead to misunderstandings, missed deadlines and missed opportunities, while misinterpretations of what went wrong and how to fix it can perpetuate the cycle of miscalculations and mistakes. The good news is that you don’t have to stay stuck in cultural challenges. Instead, by partnering with an expert, you can develop the capacities and competencies necessary to navigate situations much more effectively.

One of the biggest myths about intercultural competence is that it means morphing into what other people want you to be. This is impractical, unrealistic, and unsustainable, especially at scale. (Consider a global team with people from ten different cultures. You can’t simultaneously perform as if you’re from all of them). 🌏 It is potentially harmful for women, who already battle biases that measure our competence and worth by the extent to which we make other people feel good about themselves. And it is counterproductive. It can lead us to obsess over our own performance and pretend we are on the same page when we are not, rather than engaging with another human being and advancing towards our goals. But this doesn't mean we should stop trying to work effectively across cultures. Instead, we need to rethink what cultural competence entails. 🤔 "Forging Bonds in a Global Workforce" offers a new approach to crossing cultures. It encourages you to let go of unhelpful mindsets and offers straightforward frameworks for sparking connections, establishing rapport, and building trust - whether the other person comes from a different country, different generation, or different function inside the company. 🌻 Ready for a fresh perspective on intercultural competence? I offer workshops, one-on-one coaching, and keynote speaking. 📘 Haven't read my book yet? Print, audio, and ebook copies are available at Amazon and other booksellers. #newculturalcompetence #globalbiz #crossingcultures

  • Today I had the pleasure of delivering an intercultural workshop at UC San Diego Health. We talked about “Forging Bonds in a Global Workforce” - my new book with Andy Molinsky - and how to apply key concepts both to interactions with international patients and to bolstering collaboration between departments. Culture can be challenging, and so can relationships, but it gets easier when you have practical tools and expert guidance. I’d love to support your team with a training, consulting, or coaching, too! (And of course, be sure to check out our book!) #forgingbonds #crossingcultures #culturaltraining

  • The biggest challenge people face in building professional relationships across cultures is not the cultural differences themselves. 🌏 It's the thought processes inside our own heads about what those differences mean. 🧠 Research shows that we jump to conclusions very quickly when we meet a person for the first time - perhaps within 10 seconds. This presents a problem when we are interacting with people who have a completely different set of "getting to know you" cues and signals. Let's say you come from a culture where it is common to smile, make eye contact, and engage in small talk. But when you interact with your new colleague from another culture, these trusty overtures fall flat. Since you don't know what to make of their signals, you interpret them according to your own culture: they must be rude or unprofessional. 🙅♀️ And since your style clashes with their culture, they reach the same conclusion about you! Now you are caught in a spiral - not of cultural differences per se, but of reactions and interpretations about those differences. The good news is that you don't have to get stuck here. In our new book "Forging Bonds in a Global Workforce," Andy Molinsky and I offer a fresh approach to building relationships across cultures. 📘 #forgingbonds #crossingcultures #globalwork

  • In my grandparents' era, people only crossed cultures in the workplace if they had some special assignment, like a rare overseas business trip. But today, it's the reality - whether you ever physically go abroad or not. This presents opportunities, but also challenges and dilemmas. Research shows that diverse teams can be more dynamic and creative than monocultural ones - but also that they can completely fall apart. To achieve strong results, you need to find a way to spark a connection, establish a rapport, and build trust with people from different backgrounds. This can seem like a tall order, but you don't have to do it alone. "Forging Bonds in a Global Workforce" addresses the neglected topic of how to build professional relationships across cultures. It is an accessible read with research presented in bite-size chapters centered on relatable stories, and is, in the words of Adam Grant, "filled with actionable, data-driven advice." Now available at Amazon and local booksellers in many markets (plus digital and audio versions!) #forgingbonds #globalwork #crossingcultures

  • One of my favorite professional activities is delivering the Global Dexterity Certification with my colleagues, Kinga Białek and Andy Molinsky. The Global Dexterity method emerged from Andy's PhD research and peer reviewed articles, but it is hardly stuffy. Quite the opposite: it addresses how to adapt across cultures without losing yourself in the process and is very user-friendly and practical. Whereas Andy contributes the method, Kinga and I bring a practitioner perspective. She is a cross cultural psychologist and trainer based in Warsaw, and I am an intercultural trainer and university instructor based in LA. Together, we help certification course participants learn the method inside and out, apply it to their own lives, and prepare to use it in their own work. Curious to learn more? Join our info session on Tuesday, Sept. 24! See the link in the comments to register and receive your zoom link.
