H&K’s Locust Ridge Quarry has been providing quality construction aggregate under the H&K name since 1981. The stone being mined at the quarry is a blue/gray sandstone which yields a highly durable construction aggregate product. The aggregate is suitable for use in hot-mix asphalt, ready-mix concrete, drainage applications and general purpose use.    Locust Ridge Asphalt was added in 1985, offering a full line of asphalt materials including the standard Marshall Mix and SUPERPAVE designs. Our exceptional staff, plant layout, and silo capacity provide the high level of quality and service our customers have come to expect from us!   Both Locust Ridge Quarry and Locust Ridge Asphalt maintain certifications by PennDOT and NJDOT. #HKGroup #LocustRidgeQuarry #Mining #ConstructionMaterials

To celebrate the end of National Trucker Appreciation Week and National Construction Appreciation Week, H&K’s Douglassville Quarry hosted a grill day on Friday, September 20th, in Douglassville, Berks County, PA.   Over 100 employees, vendors and subcontractors were served burgers, hotdogs, sausage, refreshments and H&K wearables. A big thanks to the H&K Grill Masters Sam J. and Colin K., the H&K Materials Sales staff and the Douglassville Quarry staff for assisting on this perfect Friday!

H&K’s Dagsboro Stone Depot, located in Dagsboro, Delaware, is served by our Birdsboro Quarry, located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. How exactly do we transport so much aggregate to Dagsboro Stone Depot? We use rail service! Aggregates from our stone quarries are loaded into hoppers and gondolas at Birdsboro Quarry and shipped to Dagsboro Stone Depot. Once the train arrives in Dagsboro, the unloading process begins. The smaller aggregates, such as 2B, are unloaded by a belt system. The hopper cars are equipped with doors underneath, which open and allow the cars to empty the material into another hopper, which feeds the belt. For larger material, such as R5 size, a straddle carrier CAT 336FL excavator walks above the gondolas to unload the material. Both types of unloading, as well as loading of the hoppers, is shown in this video.   #HKGroup #DagsboroStoneDepot #Aggregate #ConstructionMaterials

We turn our focus back to H&K’s Northern Region to shine a spotlight on H&K’s Structures Division! Wow, where isn’t our Structures Team working these days?   On a picture-perfect morning at H&K’s P3 I-81 project area in Susquehanna County, PA, H&K’s Chief Operating Officer, James T. “Jim” Haines, was personally on-site to take some photos, catch up with the team, and get a firsthand look at this impressive project.   During his visit, Jim Haines observed significant progress in the demolition of the Susquehanna St. bridge structure near New Milford, where shoring and other reconstruction work on the existing roadway has already been completed. From there, Jim Haines headed about six miles north to Hallstead, PA, where crews are making great strides in the reconstruction of the Route 171 bridge understructure. Work here includes MSE wall construction with a settlement monitoring platform, as well as temporary wire wall construction.   Impressive and exceptionally clean work, Structures Team! Keep up the great work, and please stay safe in all you do! And thank you for the fantastic photos, Mr. Haines!

H&K Group, Inc.’s Structures Division has been hard at work rehabilitating the Kernsville Road bridge over the Jordan Creek in North Whitehall Township, PA. This unique project, which began May 1st, 2024, required the construction of cofferdams, bridge jacking, rehabilitation of existing structures, the replacement of steel truss members, and coating existing beams, all within a strict timeline. The Span 2 (smaller) superstructure was demolished and replaced with a new concrete structure, while Span 1, the steel superstructure, was jacked up so replacement of bearings and other work could be completed. Not only does the project pose challenges as far as work, but the project team was also challenged to minimize road closures as to not impact nearby school districts. The latest photos, taken last week, show the progress that crews have made in hopes of opening Kernsville Road sooner rather than later! A big thanks to Rahns Concrete for providing the concrete for this project. #HKGroup #Structures

We're heading 250 miles due north from our last post to shine a much-deserved spotlight on the hardworking men and women of H&K’s Northern Operating Region!   We’re not sure if it’s snowed yet this summer (just kidding!), but we do know that all of our team members—both from the Construction Materials and Heavy Civil Contracting divisions—are hard at work on Pennsylvania’s massive P3 I-81 reconstruction project.   A big shoutout to H&K’s Hilltop Quarry, Dunmore Asphalt, the Hallstead project team, and all other H&K divisions and affiliates supporting this monumental effort.   Keep up the great work, H&K Northern Region, and please stay safe in all you do!
