Thinking back to Copenhagen Fashion Week and this historic moment with Lucy Edwards 🧡 We were so proud not only to have been able to make this show accessible for blind and low vision guests, but to also have championed the inclusion of a blind model to walk in the show - making history as the first to do so in Copenhagen. Lucy’s participation in Sinead’s SS25 show underscored the importance of representation, inclusivity and accessibility within the fashion industry - walking a runway we made accessible with tactile guidance markers, alongside her guide dog Miss Molly. Hosted at the iconic Copenhagen Opera Park with 400 international guests, this was a monumental moment for both the blind and fashion communities 👏 British Vogue wrote a fantastic piece and caught up with our founder Anna Cofone on how the partnership came about, and our mission at Hair & Care to Make Fashion Accessible. Thank you Daniel Rodgers!

About us
Founded in 2019 and registered as a CIC in 2023, Hair & Care is dedicated to empowering Visually Impaired individuals through the exploration of hair care fundamentals. Alongside a team of volunteer hairstylists, our mission is to create a safe and inclusive environment where participants can acquire invaluable knowledge, develop essential skills and access the necessary tools to enhance their self-care routines. Through positive coaching, progressive skill development, and the strength of peer support, we aim to cultivate self-esteem, boost confidence, and foster personal growth for every individual involved. We not only show participants the basics in how to style and care for their hair, the workshops also provide the opportunity to meet new people, develop friendships and reduce the isolation suffered by so many of this group. Our work directly contributes to these 'lifelong' impacts and assists disadvantaged women and girls to live lives they want to live and overcome the barriers they face. Making Fashion Accessible: The importance of audio descriptions at Fashion Week 🧡 When we set out to make fashion shows accessible for blind and low vision guests, audio descriptions were the first feature we focussed on. For those with sight loss, the inclusion of detailed and well-considered audio descriptions is crucial, making it one of the most essential features in creating an accessible experience. At Copenhagen Fashion Week in August, we created an accessible show with designer Sinead O’Dwyer, and we were also fortunate enough to have the support of Sony, who provided headphones to enhance the audio description, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience for our guests. This was key in making the show truly accessible and aided enormously in creating an inclusive experience for our guests. Thank you Sony Electronics for your support! To be able to take our mission of accessibility to such a globally renowned event as CPHFW - often regarded as the 5th fashion week - was both an honour and a significant milestone in our journey toward a more inclusive landscape within fashion.

Thank you TaP Futures and Do Good. Well. for this piece covering our efforts for accessibility at Copenhagen Fashion Week! 👏 At Copenhagen Fashion Week this August, we provided audio descriptions and tactile swatches of Sinéad O’Dwyers SS25 collection to our blind and low vision guests. These elements enhanced the sensory experience and allowed our guests to gain a deeper understanding of the designs, beyond the traditional runway. We also championed the inclusion of the first blind model, Lucy Edwards, to walk in a show at Copenhagen Fashion Week, and the first for a London designer - a huge step for accessibility and a greater representation at fashion shows! We are so grateful for this coverage and the support! Thank you to TaP23, TaP Music Ed Millett Ben Mawson for supporting diversity and accessibility in creative spaces, and helping us achieve our goal at Copenhagen Fashion Week! 🧡 You can visit the link below for more details on our journey for accessibility in the fashion industry! 😊

Great campaign from the RNIB! 🧡 Really important message to carry with us during Blind Awareness Month and beyond 👏
🤔 #BeforeYouAsk a potentially awkward question... we have a question for you, our sighted friends. What are your misconceptions about blind and partially sighted people in the workplace, in romantic relationships, applying make-up, watching TV, using public transport and or using phones? Our campaign, Before You Ask, highlights these scenarios for a reason; each relates closely to issues that blind and partially sighted people have pointed to as areas where the most barriers are faced day-to-day. And things need to change. Before You Ask is a humourous campaign that makes a serious point. We hope it goes a long way to tackle misguided everyday questions blind and partially sighted people face, and the more deep-rooted misconceptions that prompt them. To challenge your misconceptions, visit rnib.in/BeforeYouAsk 👈 [Video transcription: School gates. School dad: Great. Uh, I'll, uh, add you to the group. Can you use… School mum: Yes, I can use a phone. School dad: Great. See you tomorrow. Audio Description: The man goes. School mum’s phone: Lily's annoying dad muted. AD: in a pub. Footie fan: Yeah, I find it hard watching the footie. Not because of my sight loss. AD: He's watching a game. Footie Fan: Because I’m a blue. AD: A woman in bed. Girlfriend: Yeah, I can get a boyfriend. AD: He's behind the visually impaired woman. Girlfriend: Yeah, he's well fit. AD: On a bus. Bus passenger: Yeah, I can travel by myself. AD: A woman eats a big kebab beside him. Buss passenger: She's not with me. AD: Looking into the mirror in a club toilet. Fashionista: Yeah, I wear makeup and I pull a silly mascara face just like you do in. AD: A busy office. Colleagues laugh. Office worker: Yes, I have a job. And yes, my boss is an idiot. AD: She forces a laugh at his cringy dancing. Narrator: To see the person, not the sight loss, search RNIB see differently.]

We’ve just wrapped up our monthly Hair & Care workshop here at the studio! 🧡 This morning our participants, some of which were guests at our accessible show with Chet Lo this London Fashion Week, discussed their experience with accessible fashion, sharing how the show was for them! The second half of the session gave our participants 1 on 1 time with a volunteer, giving them the opportunity to develop their hair techniques and ability with different tools which they can use beyond the workshops. We asked Priti about her experience attending this October workshop: “Absolutely brilliant, it’s such a wonderful opportunity to have one on one time with a hairstylist who asks the type of questions that I want to ask about my hair. A huge thanks to Anna and to Ash for taking me through how to curl my hair and use the straighteners, it’s given me a lot of confidence” You can learn more about the Hair and Care workshops here: https://lnkd.in/eZyfv4h2

October is Blind Awareness Month and the lovely Lucy Edwards has shared a fantastic list of reasons why Audio Description is so important for accessibility! Thank you Lucy 🧡👏
🎥 Six Reasons Why Audio Description is So Important As someone who relies on audio description (AD) to enjoy movies and TV shows and to consume all visual content, I can’t stress enough how crucial it is. Here are five reasons why AD matters so much: 🗣️ Inclusive Viewing Experience: Imagine not being able to follow the action in your favourite film because you can't see what's happening. AD narrates those key visual elements, making it possible for blind viewers like me to fully enjoy the story. 📚 Educational Benefits: It’s not just about entertainment. For students who are blind, AD in educational videos ensures they get the same information as their sighted peers. It’s a game-changer for inclusive learning. 🎭 Enhanced Understanding: AD adds depth by describing facial expressions, body language, and scenery. This context helps us understand the emotions and nuances in a scene, making the experience much richer. 👥 Equal Access: Everyone deserves equal access to information and entertainment. AD ensures that blind and visually impaired people aren’t left out, allowing us to participate fully in cultural and social conversations. 🌍 Broadens Audience Reach: By including AD, content creators can reach a wider audience on social media. It’s about recognising that diversity and inclusion make for better storytelling and more engaged viewers. 🗣️ Learn Characters' Names Faster: AD repeats characters' names regularly, helping me remember who’s who much quicker. It’s also fab for avoiding jump scares, as AD often gives a sneak preview of what’s about to happen. Audio description isn’t just a nice-to-have - it’s essential. Most of the internet as we know it does not have alt text images, audio described videos or accessible websites so I'm more often than not delegating tasks to my sighted team because of inaccessible content every day. Audio description brings stories to life for those of us who can’t see and ensures we aren’t missing out. If you’re a content creator, think about adding AD to your work. It makes a world of difference ❤️
