Photo Friday – The Grass Is Greener Here are some photos of a recent landfill downdrain we installed using HydroTurf™ by Watershed Geo. This material is deployed and then covered with a cementitious infill known as HydroBinder™. When combined, the final result is an armored drainage channel that effectively directs precipitation and runoff through a uniform route. You may have seen our “Photo Friday” post a few weeks ago about the Concrete Canvas USA drainage channel we installed in Pennsylvania. Here is some drone footage of the install and hydration of the material! As stated on their website, “CC is a flexible, concrete filled geosynthetic which provides a thin and durable concrete layer when hydrated. Typically, 10-times faster to install than conventional concrete solutions; essentially, it’s Concrete on a Roll™”. Utilizing this material also reduces the carbon footprint of the job because there is less concrete used overall.   This was our first time using this material; however, things went seamlessly (no stitching or welding required), and we look forward to using this product again in the future! #Hallaton #IAGI #Geosynthetics #ConcreteCanvas #Landfill #WeGotYouCovered

Photo Friday – Just Add Water! Drainage channels are often utilized with landfill operations to direct the flow of stormwater that travels down the slope of the landfill itself. Although there are many ways of installing an armored drainage channel, this was our first time using Concrete Canvas USA. This material is deployed in a shingle-like fashion and then hardened with the addition of water. This creates a rigid structure for the water to travel across for years to come. Photo Friday – Building the Basin Here is a bird’s eye view of a landfill that we are finishing up in Ohio. This project consists of nearly eight acres of geocomposite, Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL), and 60-mil HDPE liner. The implementation of multiple layers in a landfill system helps to properly collect and contain the trash/leachate, as well as providing extra resistance to punctures or breaches. X Marks the Spot The Francis Scott Key Memorial buoy can be found in our hometown on the Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore, Maryland. This buoy marks the spot where Sir Francis Scott Key observed the American flag still standing atop Fort McHenry following a British bombardment in 1814 in Baltimore. The song he wrote following these events was originally titled, “Defense of Fort M’Henry”, or commonly known as the “Star Spangled Banner” today. You can most likely recall a time you heard an Orioles or Ravens fan yell out “Oooo” during the “Oh say does that…” section of the national anthem performance, and it is a clear indicator that they are from the region. As you can see in the background, the Francis Scott Key Memorial Bridge once stood tall, but has since been removed due to a tragic accident in March. Nevertheless, this buoy is removed each year and serviced by the US Coast Guard and serves as a continual reminder of how interesting and historic of an area we call home. Photo Friday – It’s History It’s not every day that you get to work on a piece of history. Hallaton was selected to line a portion of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (C&O). This historic, hand-dug canal spans from Georgetown (Washington, D.C.) to Cumberland, MD, and was initially constructed in 1824 to serve as a trade and shipping route for the Western/Eastern Appalachian Mountains. Today, this area is a popular recreational space for outdoor enthusiasts. Lining this canal with 40 mil HDPE will prolong its lifespan for generations to come. Photo Friday – Change of Scenery Although Hallaton has performed a great deal of landfill work, we install a multitude of recreational and ornamental liners as well. Here are a few recreational ponds that we have completed over the past few years, varying from limited space applications to open-field installs. This picture shows one of our guys using an extruder on a secondary containment install for an electrical transformer.
