Big news! We are excited to announce today that Zoë Ryan will be the next director of the Hammer Museum, beginning January 1, 2025. As was previously announced last year, current Hammer director Ann Philbin will be retiring this November following 25 years of transformational leadership of the museum. Ryan comes to the Hammer from the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), University of Pennsylvania, where she has been director since 2020. In this role, Ryan oversaw a critically acclaimed program of exhibitions; spearheaded the creation of an annual art commission; and expanded public engagement efforts with a focus on building partnerships with the university, museums, and arts organizations locally, nationally, and internationally. Prior to leading ICA, Ryan was the Chair and Curator of Architecture & Design at the Art Institute of Chicago (2006–2020); in 2014, she was the curator of the second Istanbul Design Biennial, “The Future is Not What it Used to Be.” Help us welcome her to L.A.! 13ThingsLA: PST REVIEW: Breath(e): Toward Climate Change and Social Justice is now open at the Hammer. Guest co-curators Glenn Kaino and Mika Yoshitake have organized an exhibition for the ages, as a cornerstone of the PST initiative, which sets a high bar for interpreting the theme and also sets a tone of ecological intensity that posits a planetary future liberated from the violent and extractive failures of a human-centric perspective. Organized as a set of installation vignettes that encompasses sculpture, video, digital language, architecture, painting, horticulture, sound, mycology, and inventive interdisciplinary formats that defy genre, the exhibition not only reorients what art can be, it updates our understanding of what science can be as well. Breath(e) features specially commissioned works by more than 20 artists, including a living garden of potted plants and deep-rooted social justice discourse by Ron Finley; a working beehive by Garnett Puett, whose wax and honeycomb sculptures are made in apicultural collaboration; a haunting cosmic swirl AI-assisted data-set woven tapestry by Sarah Rosalena; a cyborgian experiment with human epidermal preservation by Xin Liu that has become the show’s arresting key image; portraits of extinct or mal-evolved fish species rendered with the very crude oils that destroyed their environment by Brandon Ballengée; a wall of light and sound by Ryoki Ikeda that is both sublimely frightening and celestially cleansing; slightly haunted domestic paintings by Mel Chin; and Rob Reynolds’ replica sculpture of glacial ice displayed on an art-world packing crate, referencing our ecological fetishes that both help and hurt the cause. On view in Westwood through January 5, with robust free programming throughout the exhibition’s run. If you've enjoyed this, come visit us on Substack! https://lnkd.in/gbV-9zqb

This month marks one year since I began my journey as Production Coordinator at the Hammer Museum. 🎉 It has been an invaluable learning experience, both professionally and personally. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities, from collaborating with inspiring artists and public figures to deepening my passion for the arts. I am proud to contribute to the Hammer’s programming, which facilitates critical discussions on topics that are deeply meaningful to me, including feminism, cultural appreciation, and political engagement. Working for an institution committed to social causes and public engagement has been incredibly rewarding. Additionally, one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role has been mentoring and guiding our talented student team, which has allowed me to continuously refine my leadership skills. I am also grateful for the opportunities this position has afforded me—meeting personal heroes such as Dolores Huerta, organizing exceptional performances, and recently contributing to civic engagement through our presidential debate screenings during this pivotal election cycle. The media’s recent coverage of our events highlighted the Hammer as a space for informed public discourse, and I had the unexpected chance to be featured on the news! I would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues who have supported me throughout this journey in the museum and fine arts world. I am especially thankful for the mentorship of the two exceptional women I work for who have been instrumental in my growth. I look forward to the continued growth and experiences that lie ahead in this role.
