Mayor Burgess told us the history behind our building, which is a reclaimed elementary school built in 1954, and is now being fully utilized as a vibrant, commercial space in one of the signature revitalized areas of North Charleston. Hana is a geotechnical, environmental, construction management, and drilling and field services company. Hana has expanded its South Carolina operations twice in less than a year in North Charleston. Hana Engineers & Consultants, LLC Geologist Brian Reibling recently conducted water quality sampling in some of the beautiful streams of the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains. In the photo, Brian is collecting a surface water sample using a peristaltic pump. The area is so expansive that he and the team traveled on UTVs (larger all-terrain vehicles) through the mountains to reach each sampling location. Brian also spent some time exploring the backcountry where he encountered a young cinnamon bear (300 pounds, give or take). Brian works all over the country, but is based in Hana's Charleston office on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston, S.C. #engineering #geology #bears #sc #environmental #nchs #chs

One of the interesting things about my job at Hana Engineers & Consultants, LLC is getting to discover and explore new cities and towns. I always look for cool bookstores, physical places where ink and paper meet, when I'm on assignment in different areas of the country. It's one of the things I try to do when traveling for Hana, and I always come back with a few more books (and newspapers) and stories every time I return to Charleston. As consultants, we deal in a lot of digital PDFs and create a lot of electronic reports, but I still like the tangible feel of holding paper and not knowing what I'll find when I walk into a new place or open the covers of a book I hadn't expected to find. Check out this cool bookstore I found in Huntsville, Alabama, a few weeks ago. They sell books and guitars and coffee cups. That's a blend of perfection! If you're ever in Huntsville, check out the massive 2nd & Charles, which started in 2010 in Hoover, Alabama, and a number of other eclectic and special bookstores located in Rocket City. Today is National Book Lovers Day, and your local community likely has a bookstore or a library just waiting for you to discover ink on paper. You never know what you might discover just picking something off the shelf, and you'll definitely do good buying a book from a local business like the Itinerant Literate Books in North Charleston.
