If you had studied for years and learned from the top teachers in your field, would you ever have thought they were wrong and sought your own approach to a problem? I'm sure there are very few of us who would have considered doing this, but Naomi Feil did.   Naomi earned her first degree in psychology and then her master’s degree in social work. Naomi began working at a nursing home and used the following techniques she learned for working with individuals living with dementia:   ·     Reality Orientation ·     Redirection ·     Diversion ·     Therapeutic Lie Naomi used all these techniques she was taught but soon realized that these traditional methods were only temporary solutions for the older adults she worked with—they didn't help in the long term.   Despite facing resistance and hostility from management and staff who deemed her methods radical, Naomi discovered that by truly listening and genuinely caring, one could connect with older individuals. She faced the threat of job loss and disparaging remarks at work, such as "She's as crazy as them."   Undeterred, Naomi persevered and developed her Validation Method which does not include any of the aforementioned techniques. Her determination to create a more empathetic and person-centered approach to care has had a lasting impact on the field of gerontology. In Loving Memory of Naomi Feil (1932 - 2023) It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of Naomi Feil, a compassionate soul whose life was dedicated to the betterment of others. Naomi left this world on December 24, 2023, surrounded by love from her family who also sang Broadway show tunes to her. Naomi was born on July 22, 1932 and her journey on this earth was marked by an unwavering commitment to understanding and improving the lives of those around her. A pioneering figure in the field of gerontology and dementia care, Naomi dedicated her life to developing the Validation Method, a revolutionary approach that transformed the way we connect with and care for individuals with dementia. Her impact was felt globally, as she tirelessly worked to bring empathy and understanding to the forefront of caregiving. Naomi's teachings, writings, and workshops touched countless lives, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to shape the landscape of elder care. Naomi inspired others to see the humanity in every person, regardless of their cognitive abilities, and her spirit will live on through the countless lives she touched. Naomi is survived by her family, friends, and a community of Validation Workers and Teachers, worldwide, who were fortunate enough to learn from her wisdom. We will continue to ensure her legacy of compassion and understanding will be shared worldwide. Personal Note: Just over 10 years ago I viewed the video clip of Naomi validating Gladys Wilson and knew I had to learn her method to be able to connect so deeply with people living with dementia. This decision changed the focus of my life's work. I feel so fortunate to have met with Naomi just a few months ago in her home in Oregon. For me, she was truly a superstar, trailblazer and inspiration. Naomi, may you rest in peace, knowing that you have left an indelible mark on the hearts of all those you have touched, and your life's work will continue. Naomi Feil began her career studying acting and even performed Off-Broadway! Her background in acting has played a crucial role in her teaching of the Validation Method, which uses role-play to help students understand and empathize with the behavior of older people with memory loss. In this video clip, you can see how Naomi Feil transforms herself into an angry old woman while her daughter, Vicki DeKlerk-Rubin becomes the Validation worker. These two incredible women manage to bring people to life through role-playing. Naomi’s daughter, Vicki, is the Executive Director of the Validation Training Institute and I was fortunate to learn both the Validation Worker’s Course and The Validation Teachers’ Course with her.
