Key insight from our last Customer Council meeting of inventory managers and buyers: - Most buyers “pad” days of supply to account for lead times—often about 7 days—when placing orders. - For example, if a buyer wants 14 days’ worth of Jeeter pre-rolls, they’ll calculate for 21 days, assuming it takes a week for the order to arrive. - The problem: If Jeeter pre-rolls are already out of stock, this padding results in excess inventory when the order arrives, which impacts cash flow and shelf space. When compounded across +500 products per store at various run rates and stock levels, these dollars can add up. - In response, we quickly added a lead time feature to help buyers factor in precise lead times per item, whether restocking or replenishing. Results have been crazy, it’s by far our fastest-adopted feature, and is allowing us to capture a rich data set of inventory lead time ranges across markets and products. The council is exclusive to cannabis retail buyers on our Happy Buyers platform and has been invaluable for sharing best practices. Interested in joining? DM me!

Andrew has been spending a lot of time in a huge office with a giant bud tower. Also with a lot of retailers talking about inventory. Check out these insights in his latest musings.

Been diving deep with cannabis retailers on inventory. Some observations: - Most buyers overstock out of fear of running out of popular items, but this often leads to overestimating demand for slower-moving products. Spreadsheets built on historical data frequently miscalculate stock needs because of formula assumptions that over-solve for out-of-stocks. - 70% of products sell less than 1 unit per day; 20% sell less than 1 unit every 14 days. Over-stocking is a much bigger financial strain than out-of-stocks for most stores. On average, stores carry 52 days of supply (notably stores with large wholesale and reciprocity agreements have over 100 days of supply). - Inventory overages lead to frequent discounts, and consumers typically just switch to another product when an item is out of stock. While the financial impact of out-of-stocks isn’t as severe as overstocking, the fear still drives decision-making. - Buyers often know their fast movers but overestimate product velocity, and few can quickly name what hasn’t sold in the last week. - This fear of out-of-stocks is driving billions of dollars in problems, from inventory debt to rising working capital. - The emotional weight of wanting to avoid disappointing consumers is real, and it’s a huge factor driving these decisions. But we need to figure out a way to balance that fear with smarter inventory management. Pic for the algo

Product & Operations @ Happy Cabbage - predictable revenue growth for retailers

THIS IS A POLITICAL POST About our duty to vote and participate in this grand experiment so it can last as long as we're able to keep it alive. I believe Election Day should be a Federal Holiday. Because it's not and someone gave me (or I elected myself!) the position of managing our holiday calendar - Election Day IS a company holiday at Happy Cabbage. Here's the reminder I sent to the team today. Whatever you do, vote. It's important. "TWO WEEKS until the presidential election. TWO WEEKS. Reminder that we're closed on Election Day. If you're not able to or missed the cutoff to vote early, use it to vote! It's important! Host an election watch party, participate in one, doom scroll all day (not recommended), reflect on how you ended up in this country and what you can do to steer it in the direction you'd like it to go. Ignore all of it and say "I did my part" and play video games all day. I can't dictate how the day is used, but the day is important, and voting is important. Vote."

Buyers are constantly padding desired days on hand with lead times when reordering 🙅   This is mental math on top of tons of spreadsheet math. The good news? With Happy Buyers, you can just use our new lead time feature!   Have no idea what we’re talking about? Forward this to the buyer at your store. Lead times in Happy Buyers account for the amount of inventory you'll sell from now until the delivery truck arrives without you doing the extra math. You'll always have the right amount of inventory on hand - not too little or too much. Using lead times in Happy Buyers will save a ton of hours of manually padding numbers in your ordering. Now with lead times, Happy Buyers helps you reorder with hyper accuracy and insane speed: 📆 Set your desired days on hand Set this based on how many days of inventory you want to have when the delivery arrives at your store. 🏃 Add your lead time Set this based on how many days there are from now until the delivery will arrive at your store. 👀 Select your lookback period Set this based on the period of time you want to reference for calculating units per day. Once you lock these in, Happy Buyers shows you how many units to order. 🧮 Units to order is how many units you need to order to have your desired days on hand upon delivery; this takes into consideration current stock levels, units sold per day, and your lead time. Calculating how much inventory you need to order now to have a set number of days on hand when the delivery truck arrives is a balancing act. It takes knowing current stock levels, how fast the products are currently selling, how many days of inventory you want, and how long of a lead time your vendor has - and then you need to cross reference that data to know how many units to request on your order form right now. 🥴 Let Happy Buyers do the work for you. Using lead times, you'll know exactly how many units you need to order today to have your desired days on hand for those products when the delivery arrives. This feature was a request by many of our Happy Buyers users during our Customer Council. If you sign up to be a Happy Buyer, you can also join our Customer Council discussions for free. They are an open forum round table conversation featuring retail buyers for multi-location or multi-state chains down to single location mom and pop retailers. The insights are tremendous, the advice they give each other is literal gold, and there’s great camaraderie generated that is inspiring. Take a tour of Happy Buyers, sign up to be one yourself, and join the most valuable buyers’ discussion in cannabis. Hit us up in the DMs or go to our website and book a demo. Happy Buying!
