Large-format light metal casting with machines above 4000T (often referred to as "gigacasting") has brought a great deal of innovation in the passenger car space. Whereas light-duty vehicle manufacturers have chosen this path for body-in-white primarily for cost reductions, Harbinger has chosen this technology to produce its battery pack enclosures to meet the challenging requirements of the commercial vehicle environment. Reduction in part count, improved watertightness and mass optimization are just a few of the benefits of a single-piece battery pack enclosure. These tools are machined from enormous blocks of tool steel, scanned and measured to confirm sub-millimeter precision, hardened to ensure a long service life and will go into service for rapid-fire battery pack production.
