Women-Owned Wednesday! Today we’re shining a light on the work of Tullia Bruno, PhD, assistant professor in the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Immunology. Dr. Bruno’s work focuses on immunotherapy as a potential treatment for ovarian cancer. This is exciting because only 10% of current ovarian cancer patients benefit from immunotherapy treatments. Specifically, Dr. Bruno’s research focuses on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) which can either promote or suppress the immune system’s response to cancer and interact with cancer-fighting T-cells. She aims to reveal specific factors within the ovarian cancer tumor microenvironment so that innovative treatments can be developed to improve patient outcomes. Today we’d like to highlight the career accomplishments of Hadiyah-Nicole Green, PhD, an American medical physicist who pioneered a new cancer treatment. The treatment uses a laboratory method to insert nanoparticles into cancer cells without affecting the surrounding healthy cells. The tissue incorporating the nanoparticles heats up due to directed laser radiation and ultimately destroys the cancer cells. So far, Dr. Green’s treatment has only been proven in animal models, but her current research hopes to extend the treatment to humans. Dr. Green enjoys sharing her knowledge and expertise with the next generation of scientists when she isn’t in the lab. She regularly speaks to and mentors young black students pursuing careers in the life sciences.
