  • AskA2L Question of the Week: What is the install deadline for VRF systems using R-410A? Answer: Based on the EPA's proposed rule amending the 2023 Technology Transition Rule, the installation deadline for VRF systems using high-GWP refrigerants (including R-410A) has been delayed by one year to January 1, 2027. For VRF systems using R-410A: · Systems can be installed until January 1, 2027 · However, any equipment installed in 2026 must have been manufactured or imported before January 1, 2026 · Any high-GWP equipment manufactured or imported after January 1, 2026 can only be used to service existing systems · Any equipment sold after January 1, 2027 can only be used to service existing systems The EPA defines VRF systems as: 1. Having a compressor with 3 variable capacities 2. Having more than one evaporator on the refrigerant circuit 3. For air-source VRF systems, being at least 65,000 BTU in size This delay was provided to avoid stranded inventory and is consistent with changes made for residential and light commercial split-system air conditioners and heat pumps. -- HARDI and Distro partnered together to create a tool specifically to answer all your A2L Transition questions.
