After Terrenna Scott went to the doctor’s office to confirm she was pregnant, she was also eventually diagnosed with breast cancer. She was not surprised when she tested positive for the BRCA gene because her grandmother and her cousin had breast cancer. “When I told my kids, they were devastated; screaming and crying,” she says. “I told them, ‘You can cry today, but tomorrow we start fighting.’ I didn't feel like that, but I needed to feel like that for them. They were relying on my strength.” Her advice to others going through this tough journey with kids is to be honest with them and educate them. “Bring them on the journey with you and let them know you are going to be OK,” she says. “Once they are good, you will be too. I always told myself, ‘Even though you have breast cancer, don't become breast cancer.” #breastcancerawarenessmonth #harrishealth

In the middle of the global COVID pandemic, Priscila Rivera was diagnosed with breast cancer. “During COVID they didn't have many appointments available, so it was six months before I could get something.” She was eventually referred to Harris Health El Franco Lee Health Center. While waiting to have surgery, in April, Rivera was hit with another life-changing situation. She found out she was pregnant. Rivera’s gynecologist, oncologist and surgeon partnered to come up with a personalized healthcare plan that included moving forward with the surgery in June at Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital. The staff took really good care of me," she says. Today, Rivera says she feels good and her baby is happy and healthy. #breastcancerawarenessmonth #harrishealth
