In 2023, CID launched the GEM Incubation Fund which supports emerging research on topics that align with the theme of our annual Global Empowerment Meeting. The focus of GEM23 was climate and international development. One of our first incubation fund awardees, Dr. Harry Verhoeven and researchers at Asal , recently recorded a podcast where they discuss their research on climate knowledge and how it can influence and shape climate policies in Somalia. This conversation highlights the importance of local perspectives in tackling global climate challenges. "For us, it’s simple. Those who pollute have to pay for that pollution." Last Friday, the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School hosted Rt. Hon. KP Sharma Oli, Prime Minister of Nepal, at the JFK Jr. Forum. The conversation with Prime Minister Oli highlighted the urgent threat of climate change as well as Nepal’s commitment to democracy and transitional justice. Prime Minister Oli also took questions from the audience, including Nepali students at Harvard, addressing topics such as Nepal's global image, youth migration, infrastructure investments, and more. The discussion was moderated by Fatema Z. Sumar, Executive Director of the Harvard Center for International Development, and Michael Puett, Walter C. Klein Professor of Chinese History and Anthropology, and Director of the Asia Center at Harvard University. This event was co-sponsored by the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School, The Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, Harvard University, the Harvard Center for International Development, and the Asia Center at Harvard University. CID Fellow Dejan Kovač presented his research last week to the CID community. During his presentation, Dejan discussed identifying and selecting talent throughout different stages of a person's educational path. He stated: “A more philosophical question for us to think of would be – how many new Nikola Teslas or Marie Curies have we failed to identify in the past, and how many we are at risk of not identifying in the future?” Thanks, Dejan, for sharing your insights with the CID community. Fellows are an important part of CID's research community. They spend time researching, writing, and engaging with the Harvard community during their time at CID's Harvard Kennedy School home base. Why are there such significant differences across countries in governments’ ability to extract a share of national income in taxation? What can low- and middle-income countries do to improve their ability to tax? How does the pursuit of tax collection depend upon and influence other objectives of a tax system such as equity, growth and the building of a strong state? #CIDFacultyAffiliate Anders Jensen served as Senior Editor for VoxDev's first VoxDevLit edition on Taxation. Have a read and listen to the launch conversation recorded earlier today. Harvard Kennedy School
