Meet Hawaii Pacific Health 2024 Summer Student Research Program (SSRP) scholar Shari Ho, a junior at the University of Notre Dame and graduate of Punahou School. Shari's grandfather is one of her favorite role models. "He was an oncologist at Straub Benioff Medical Center and retired a few years ago. Thanks to the opportunities that come with being part of the SSRP, I am meeting so many new people who work for HPH ... and they all had so much respect for my grandpa and for the work he did over the years. Everyone said he was extremely kind, patient and knowledgeable, and I hope one day my patients and colleagues will see me in the same way." Clinical research study: Utilization of Integrative Medicine Services Among Survivors of Childhood, Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer. Principal Investigator: Dr. Kelley Hutchins, pediatric hematology/oncology physician at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children.

The 2024 SSRP scholars started off their fourth week by leading the highly anticipated Healthy Living community health event at Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center July 8. The students presented tips and reminders on nutrition and habits for a healthy lifestyle to kupuna. The program also featured a Q&A session with Dr. Dale Glenn and an energetic chair Zumba routine led by Dr. Chieko Kimata with the help of the SSRP scholars. The event concluded with the distribution of fresh produce and delicious bentos for participants to take home. The free event was supported by the M. Lou Hefley, MD Endowment Fund, established by the Straub Foundation. The scholars’ week continued with “careers in medicine” talks with Hawaii Pacific Health Medical Group CEO Dr. Les Chun, and the leadership of Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children: Chief Operating Officer Gidget Ruscetta and Vice President of Hospital Operations Mike Foutch. The scholars' visit to Kapiolani concluded with a tour of the facility. At Hoʻoulu ʻĀina, the scholars contributed to tending to the 100-acre nature preserve, owned and operated by Kōkua Kalihi Valley (KKV). After a morning of hard work, the scholars met with KKV’s CEO Dr. David Derauf, who shared the health center’s comprehensive approach to health, from primary care services to a variety of community and culture-based programs. The scholars learned about their efforts to integrate traditional practices - lāʻau lapaʻau (plant medicine), lomilomi massage, hoʻoponopono (mental health) - into their clinic.

Hawaii Pacific Health is proud to partner with Kamehameha Schools (KS) on several initiatives, including increasing opportunities for Native Hawaiian students interested in pursuing health care careers. At the Kamehameha Schools Intern Breakfast July 1, a panel of KS alumni who work at HPH shared their stories of choosing their career pathways with KS graduates who are currently taking part in the HPH Health Careers Summer Internship. Following the formal panel, students had the chance to sit with each panelist for an intimate talk story and address any questions they had regarding their future endeavors. Panelists Leah Nahale, HPH risk management manager, Kauhi Ahana, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children staffing manager, and Dr. Jonathan Aki, Hawaii Pacific Health Medical Group urgent care physician, shared their stories to bring awareness to students that both clinical and non-clinical careers are available at HPH. Mahalo to Erika Cravalho-Meyers, KS strategy consultant and Mike Robinson, HPH vice president of government relations and community affairs, for spearheading this opportunity. Hawaii Pacific Health’s four medical centers - Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center and Straub Benioff Medical Center on Oahu, and Wilcox Medical Center on Kauai – participated in the Rim of the Pacific's (RIMPAC) statewide humanitarian assistance and disaster response exercise July 11. In this simulated emergency response exercise, our summer interns did an outstanding job taking on the roles of “patients” rescued by the military from the hurricane disaster zone. They were then transported from the field hospital at Ford Island and taken to an HPH facility with various types of injuries. These training drills give our staff the opportunity to put their disaster and emergency response skills to use, and serve as a great experience for our summer interns to get a behind-the-scenes look at this military exercise. RIMPAC is the the world’s largest international maritime exercise hosted by the Commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, headquartered at Pearl Harbor. #healthierhawaii #hphohana #summerinterns #internship #learning #handson #interns
