In the past two weeks, the Hawaiian Humane Society has seen an alarming increase in positive cases of canine parvovirus (CPV) and feline panleukopenia (FPV) incoming to our Kosasa Family Campus at Hoʻopili, particularly among puppies and kittens. These highly contagious diseases are spread through fecal contamination and cause severe symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration and immune system suppression. They can be fatal if left untreated. All dogs/cats brought into the Hawaiian Humane Society’s campuses receive species-specific vaccinations upon admission to protect against CPV/FPV and other diseases. However, please note that most animals entering the shelter system have not received routine vaccinations before coming in, and vaccinations take time to become effective. The added stress of the shelter environment makes them more vulnerable to contagious diseases. “One pet entering the shelter with community-acquired disease can rapidly spread that disease to other animals, even before symptoms develop,” said Dr. Becca Boronat, National Shelter Medicine Veterinarian at Best Friends Animal Society, a leading national animal welfare organization, working to save the lives of cats and dogs in America’s shelters by 2025. “Shelters can take every appropriate precaution to reduce infectious disease but are still not immune to outbreaks. The very conditions necessitated by traditional animal sheltering predispose pets to illness.” "What's happening in the shelters reflects what's happening in the community. Therefore, the solution also lies in the community," emphasizes Dr. Boronat. "We implore everyone to step up and help get as many healthy pets adopted or into foster homes as possible and to play a role in reducing shelter intake now and in the future." Our shelter will remain open for adoptions, fostering and resources, but with stricter disease prevention protocols. To find out how you can make a difference, see our comment below. Mahalo for your kōkua and compassion.

With our shelters facing a critical situation and capacity stretched thin, foster volunteers are needed now more than ever! Our most urgent need is support fostering medium and large dogs not quite ready for adoption, like sweet Mama (shown here). Some dogs may have additional medical considerations that we will walk you through in advance. Thanks to the support of Best Friends Animal Society, the first 10 families who are matched with a medium or large dog and complete a 2-week foster period will also receive a $200 Visa gift card. Act quickly - if you're new to fostering, sign up today at https://lnkd.in/gvFPfNBF. We provide all of the training, supplies and veterinary care to support your foster during their stay with you. If you're an existing foster with Hawaiian Humane, reach out to our Foster Care team ASAP to get matched to a foster dog at fostercare@hawaiianhumane.org. Can't foster a medium or large adult dog but have room in your home for a fur-iend? We have other animals in need of immediate foster placement as well. Our shelters are currently facing a critical situation, with capacity stretched to the limit and rising cases of parvovirus and panleukopenia incoming to our Kosasa Family Campus at Hoʻopili. With nearly 1,200 animals in our care at both shelters, overcrowding significantly heightens the risk of illness. To protect the health of our shelter pets and mitigate disease spread, we kindly ask the community to pause on bringing in owner-surrendered pets for the time being. Here’s how you can help us create more space and safeguard the well-being of animals in need: ADOPT: If you're considering welcoming a new pet into your home, choose adoption! All pets that are available for adoption from Hawaiian Humane have been medically cleared, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and given flea, tick and heartworm preventatives. Plus, from now until September 30, all adoption fees for dogs and cats are 100% waived, thanks to Best Friends Animal Society! Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gWHsaJ3T. FOSTER: By providing a temporary home for a shelter pet, you help relieve overcrowding while giving them a much-needed break. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gvFPfNBF. CARE FOR STRAY PETS: Many lost animals can be reunited with their families without needing to enter the shelter. If you find a stray, attempt to reunite them with their owner first. You should immediately file a Found Pet Report at https://lnkd.in/gznMmryT and take the pet to a vet for a microchip scan. If you can care for the pet temporarily, we'll assist in reuniting them with their family. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gansy3TP. OPT TO REHOME YOUR PET: If you must part with your pet, please utilize our Home to Home platform first. This approach not only frees up vital space in our shelters but also helps your pet transition directly to a new home without the stress of the shelter environment. Learn more at HawaiianHumane.org/rehome. SPAY/NEUTER YOUR PET: This essential procedure prevents unwanted litters and helps reduce pet overpopulation, while also enhancing your pet's health and well-being. Learn more about low-cost and subsidized spay/neuter options at https://lnkd.in/giPtp9bF. We are dedicated to supporting animals in need, but we can’t do it without you. Mahalo for your kōkua!

We set our goal of 808 adoptions for Clear the Shelters month. Well, we are HOWLING at the results: we reached a whopping 844 adoptions from August 10 - September 10! We are thrilled that 503 cats, 305 dogs, 31 rabbits and guinea pigs, 3 birds and 2 reptiles found loving homes here on Oʻahu thanks to NBCUniversal, Hill's Pet Nutrition, Greater Good Charities' month-long Clear the Shelters nationwide adoption event. While we are celebrating 844 families made whole through adoption, the reality of animal sheltering is that there are always more pets in need. It would have been incredible to truly Clear the Shelters, but during that same time period, 1,199 pets came into our care. That means, for every kennel opened, it was filled immediately, and then some. We still have a long way to go out of this shelter crisis - and you can be a part of the solution. Make a massive impact by continuing to support Hawaiian Humane by adopting, fostering, volunteering or donating today at HawaiianHumane.org! #HawaiianHumane #ClearTheShelters

As if their original donation of the five-acre plot of land that houses our Kosasa Family Campus at Hoʻopili wasn't enough, the incredible team at D.R. Horton Hawaiʻi dropped by last week with a massive donation of pet food and essential supplies. This generous contribution will have a direct and immediate impact, benefitting our Pet Food Bank, a temporary assistance program for those in the community experiencing pet food insecurity. It was wonderful to share with the D.R. Horton team the impact that their support has made - from the groundbreaking of our second campus to the vital work we're able to do today. Mahalo nui loa, D.R. Horton Hawaiʻi! Your generosity is truly making a difference in the lives of Oʻahu's pets and their families. #HawaiianHumane
