Hawaii’s premier firm for general architecture, off-grid water, wastewater, and energy system-specific projects.
About us
HAWAII'S PREMIER ARCHITECTURE FIRM With over 60 years of combined experience in architecture and engineering and 20 years of off-grid and remote location know-how, HIOG is positioned to offer clients the best service available in general architecture or off-grid water, wastewater, and energy system-specific projects. David Sellers, AIA, our Principal Architect, and Jake Freeman, our Principal Civil Engineer met on the island of Palmyra Atoll, about 1000 miles south of Hawaii. David was the Nature Conservancy's Acting Director, and Jake had just donated over $120,000 in labor to help complete a $1.2 million renewable energy project. This project sparked a lifelong friendship. When David returned to Hawaii after completing his degree in Architecture at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, they decided to combine their expertise to start Hawaii Off Grid: Architecture & Engineering. Our Philosophy We practice design with sensitivity to the challenges of our times, to work with our communities, and to practice sustainability within our environment. OUR MISSION To provide high quality sustainable carbon positive architecture, engineering and design that serves our community and clients with equity, honesty and integrity while improving our society through engagement, philanthropy and education. OUR VISION To craft inspirational architecture derived from site specific challenges with an uncompromising standard of a net zero minimum for every new building we design. Our work benefits the community, local and global, and pushes our built environment that will sustain future generations.

“We are so grateful for the show of support from our AIA leaders to come to Maui, to see firsthand, and to listen and learn from our AIA members, local officials, and community members,” said Sellers. “President Kimberly Dowdell’s initiative to encourage local governments to have a chief architect is a great fit for Maui, especially considering the work we have to do regarding housing and rebuilding Lahaina.” https://lnkd.in/gymBkffz

AIA Honolulu and AIA Maui welcomed AIA 2024 President Kimberly Dowdell & AIA CEO/EVP Lakisha Ann Woods, CAE to Hawaii for the first time. They spent the first few days on Oahu learning about the Skyline, checking out iconic architecture like the Liljestrand House, and meeting with local wahine architects sharing wisdom and inspiration. They then flew to Maui to tour the burn zone in Lahaina, check out the progress at Ohana Hope Village and meet with Mayor Bissen to discuss what a Chief Architect role could mean for Maui. Huge mahalo for making the long trip to visit our islands and learn more about our culture and the impact the fires have had on our community.

The Hawaii Energy Conference & Exhibition was recently held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In a world where extreme weather events are increasing in severity and frequency, prioritizing energy resilience for homes, businesses, and communities is the only path forward to maintain a reliable and accessible supply of energy. Done properly, resilient energy systems can also improve health, comfort, and affordability. The goal of the conference was to explore cutting-edge solutions to improve resilience in the face of a rapidly changing climate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Hawaii Off Grid, Principal Architect, David Sellers along with Race Randle, CEO, Maui Land & Pineapple Company and Ben Sullivan, Deputy Director, City & County of Honolulu Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency moderated by Jaqui Hoover, from the Hawaii Island Economic Development Board (HIEDB), sat on a panel titled: Resilient Housing and Energy, to discuss energy needs for resilient housing and some of the lessons learned since the August 2023 fires. Some of the attendees from the Hawaii Energy Conference also got the chance to tour the Ohana Hope Village in Kahului, an off grid, mid-term housing solution designed by Hawaii Off Grid, for families and Kupuna who lost their homes in the Maui wildfires.

One of the many reasons why we are so grateful to be a part of the ‘Ohana Hope Village project is as Dr. Ashley Kelly, Chief Operating Officer for Family Life Center shared “Many of our prospective residents have moved several times since the devastating fires, some have moved up to nine times. At ‘Ohana Hope Village, these families finally have a place they can call their own for a few years while we will work alongside them to heal and plan their next steps.” Having a stable place to stay and the support of Family Life Center and their community will be essential to the healing and rebuilding of the Maui Community. #hawaiioffgrid #HIOG #netzero #offthegrid #hawaii #maui #kuleana #luckywelivehawaii #OhanaHopeVillage

🌞 In the pursuit of sustainable living, designing a home that harmonizes with its environment is key. Orienting your home to maximize solar exposure and water efficiency is crucial for reducing your environmental impact while enhancing comfort. Check out our tips for efficient solar and water design: 1. Embrace Solar Orientation: Capture Hawaii's abundant sunshine with thoughtful home design, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources for a naturally comfortable living space. 2. Site Analysis: Identify areas with optimal sun exposure to maximize solar gain for passive heating and lighting. 3. Passive Solar Design: Incorporate large windows on the southern façade and shading devices to regulate temperature and optimize energy efficiency. 4. Solar Panels: Harness Hawaii's sunlight with photovoltaic panels for clean electricity generation and reduced utility bills. 5. Solar Water Heating: Utilize solar thermal collectors to meet hot water needs efficiently, lowering energy consumption and costs. 6. Rainwater Harvesting: Collect rainwater for irrigation and household use, conserving freshwater resources. 7. Greywater Recycling: Reuse wastewater for non-potable purposes, reducing demand on freshwater sources. 8. Drought-Tolerant Landscaping: Choose native, water-efficient plants to minimize irrigation needs and support local ecosystems. 9. Water-Efficient Fixtures: Install low-flow fixtures and appliances to decrease water usage without compromising performance. Designing with solar and water efficiency in mind contributes to sustainable living and a greener future. Ready to explore off-grid home plans and systems?
