Haxtun, Colorado is a town of just under 1000 people located in the far northeast corner of the state near the Nebraska state line. The hospital, built in the early 1960s still stands today serving the community in the same way it has for 60 years now. Yesterday, Bridget Frazier and I got to sit down with Dewane Pace and his senior leadership team to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the community and the hospital. One only needs to be around these rural health care leaders for a few minutes to be fully immersed and feel the passion for their community and for rural health. To be clear, the challenges are many in keeping a critical access hospital afloat in this day and age. But Dewane and his team are doing more than that. Not only are they strengthening this vital healthcare resource for Northeast Colorado, but they are also in the process of building a brand new main street clinic that will greatly expand access to health care for Haxtun and the surrounding communities.
